My daughter absolutely fell in love with the Wellesley campus when we visited during her junior year and she learned she was accepted on Saturday.
In the past year, she has started to use her background in art and design to pursue film. She is seriously considering a career in film- perhaps cinematography, directing (possibly screenwriting). Not sure if Wellesley will be the right choice if she wants to pursue a career in film. Anyone familiar with the Cinema and Media Studies major? Is Wellesley not the right choice for an “artsy” student?
I can’t comment on Wellesley’s program - but getting internships in the field would be of value and where she can get the hands on experience on top of her theory classes. I imagine Wellesley career office could assist - plus being a successful student at the school should count too.
I’m a current Wellesley student, and although I am not a Cinema and Media Studies (CAMS) major, I have taken CAMS classes before. I found these classes to be interesting and engaging and the professors to be supportive and accessible. I do not know if Wellesley would necessarily be the best fit if your daughter wants a larger program, and course offerings can sometimes be limited. There are a fair number of “artsy” students at Wellesley. If your daughter is set on pursuing a film career, having to fulfill Wellesley’s distribution requirements (including math, science, etc.) may be irksome for her. It would be worthwhile to compare major and degree requirements at other colleges where she has been accepted. Wellesley Career Education has an advisor specifically for arts/media careers, so that would definitely be a resource to help find internships, jobs, explore career paths, etc. I’ve also found that professors are always happy to talk about career stuff with students during office hours.
