My d is deciding whether she wants to travel home for fall break and we'd like her to take the train, although the times aren't so great. Just wondered how far off campus the Amtrak station is and how safe it is at night. Looks like she will be travelling alone as others are flying.I just want to make sure the station is safe late at night.

Bad thing about Amtrak in Columbia is that the trains always seem to go through here at horrible times - like after midnight. D and I took one her friends to catch train at fall break as freshman. Station is down in Vista - not far in distance, but not really walkable. I felt fine leaving her friend there even though not a whole lot of staff or riders waiting, but he’s a guy. Very bare bones station - no wifi or amenities.

Does she have a local friend to take her and hang out while waiting? I know the train takes a really long time. Are you sure it’s not almost as cheap to fly?

Thanks for the info scmom12…actually it is slightly cheaper to fly if she flies from Myrtle Beach (she’s only taking train one way because she has a ride back), but the flights out are not working with her schedule Wed. Seems like a lot of traveling to me for a short fall break, although of course i’ll love seeing her.
