Hello,

I am beginning the admission process and have just a few questions about Weslyean. What is the culture like there? In other words, how does it feel to be on campus? What is the student body like? What are the most unique classes? How important is athletics? What are the most popular majors?

Thank you

Economics, Neuroscience, Government, English and Film studies are popular courses at Wesleyan, but, that’s only part of the story. Wesleyan students compose one of the most eclectic student cultures of any college or university its size in the United States. Athletics are a significant part of the landscape, but, far from the dominant part. The performing arts, including dance, music and theater also ignite large portions of the student body.

How does it feel to be on campus? I would say, on most nights of the week you can probably hear a pin drop because people are so preoccupied with keeping up with their academic work. However, starting around Thursday (Wednesday, if you are old enough to partake of “Bar Night”, a weekly downtown event) the house parties start, the bands begin tuning up and movies begin to be shown. A good way to take the pulse of campus is to follow Wesleying, one of the best student-run blogs in the country. And, even though it is basically the product of whomever writes for it at any given moment, an awful lot manages to get covered: http://wesleying.org/

Thank you for all of that information! I also just wanted to know how popular science is there? Are there any really interesting science courses? (Marine Biology, Astronomy, etc) ALso, how important are interviews and campus visits?

JW: Does/would Wesleyan participate in the 5th year Engineering program with Dartmouth as do Vassar, Bowdoinand Middlebury and a dozen other colleges? If it’s not a set program per se, would i be allowed to request arranging it? Has anyone from Wes done so before? Thank you!

You can meet Jason segel from how I met your mother…

Jrd7284: Science is very strong at Wesleyan, and while not as popular as psych/gov/econ, it’s still very present: http://www.wesleyan.edu/sciences/sciencefacts.html

Wes also has a fantastic observatory, and I know of a number of students that did take astronomy. Otherwise, the telescopes are open for public use Wednesday nights. The first time you see Saturn’s rings is something you won’t forget.

tallgirl: Wesleyan participates in a 3-2/4-2 program with Columbia and Caltech. Most students who want engineering go this route, but considering many of Wesleyan’s peers participate in the 3-2/4-2 Dartmouth program (though Amherst and Williams do not officially participate either), I don’t see why it would be a problem. It would probably be easier, though, to do the Columbia or Caltech option because the route is established… [Welcome, Wesleyan and Engineering - Wesleyan University](Welcome, Wesleyan and Engineering - Wesleyan University)
