I was wondering what the proper etiquette was for informing the schools that have accepted my son know that he does not intend to enroll. Is a letter required or is it just understood if they do not receive a deposit? I have another son and want to make sure we do the right thing in case he decides to apply to one of these schools in the future. Thanks

I think usually there's a card to send back indicating whether or not you'll be attending. It's polite to let them know, but a letter is not neccessary unless you'd like to send one. I sent a letter to a college that offered me a full scholarship letting them know how much I appreciated the offer and thanking them for their prompt notification, etc. Some schools will send you a survey after you let them know you're not attending because they want to know who they lost out to and why- I know Princeton does.
