Insuring Personal Property

I just called my insurance company to check on insuring my D's laptop and musical instrument. Although they said both are already covered under my existing homeowners policy, there is a $1,000 deductible first.

I remember when my eldest D went to another college that I received mailers from outside companies for insurance coverage for personal property in her dorm. The fee was minimal-I think around $50. I have not received anything like this this time.

Does anyone have any experiences to share involving protecting personal property from theft? It's rather hard to secure a trumpet:P

i would like to know this, too; for my guitar and laptop.

There are personal articles policies which will insure just the item named such as the computer. Another option is to get a rental policy. This can have a much lower deductible then your homeowners policy and will give them coverage for all of their property as well as liability and MPC coverage.

Thanks Tarhounm. Do you have more information about where to purchase the rental policy? I was swamped with junk mail when my eldest daughter went off to college-from sheet sets to optional insurance. I am not sure if the lack of mail is due to the economy and mail expense cutbacks, but I haven't received the first college junkmail advertisement. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT complaining about not getting junkmail, but right about now a rental policy offer would be welcomed. ;)

I found my own answer on another thread (Parent Cafe) There are testimonials for CSI www.collegestudent insurancecom/ 888-411-4911. For a $4,000 policy, it will cost me less than $100 per year. My homeowner's policy would have $1K deductible.

gato great info thanks for sharing this!!

We have our policies with State Farm. All of the major carriers that write homeowners will probably also write a rental policy for students with a lower deductible.
