Int. Chances at Pomona

<p>My girlfriend is an international applicant (even though she has been living in the USA for several years) from China. I'd like to get a good idea of her chances to get into Pomona.</p>

<p>SAT: 790 Math, 700 Verbal, 670 Writing
SAT II: 800 Math IIC, 800 Chem, 800 Bio (I think)
Class Rank: 2-4 out of 200 at a very competitive public high school in America
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Chinese
Essays: very good (she's a very good writer in English, will this help her chances since most internationals aren't amazing at writing in English?)
Recs: One letter from the Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. She is one of two students. Cleveland Orchestra is one of the 5 best orchestras in the world and some see it as THE best orchestra in the world. The concertmaster is the first chair, first violin (best violinist in the orchestra). I've heard this letter of rec is absolutely amazing. Her other letter is from a teacher and it's above average.
ECs: Summer neuroscience research in Montreal
Summer Orchestras
State Orchestra
Science Olympiad captain with some medals
National Art competition awards
1st place in latin in the state (or was it country?)
Then your typical high school ECs</p>

<p>She is applying as a double major in neuroscience and music. She's also applying for financial aid and I think her EFC is around 10k/yr. She might have a hook because she is phenomenal at violin and sent in audition tapes to Pomona. The music school called her back and told her that she was an amazing player and with their help could become a great performer and that she had a spark that most of the applicants of the same playing level lacked. She did not advance to the second round for the music scholarship mostly because she is international, but it sounded as if the music people definitely want her to major in music if she goes there. Will this help get her in?</p>

<p>Good job to your girlfriend. She has some amazing accomplishments! I'd say that her chances in general look excellent, with the only conceivable weakness being SAT verbal (and writing if they're looking at it yet). If English is her second language, then I take it back.</p>

<p>I don't know how much easier/more difficult admissions are for international students, but off the top of my head, I'd say she has more than a strong shot. As we both know, never a guarantee, but she has great scores, great ECs, great recs, and faculty backing. Hard to top. Definitely an application that's worth her time.</p>

<p>Good luck to her (and you)! On a random note, I know a Pomona alum '00 who dual-majored in music and neuro (interesting subjects to tie together into one thesis). She gave both programs and the school in general wonderful, wonderful reviews!</p>

<p>I say this tongue-in-cheek, but a perfect score in either SATI or II, puts you halfway into HYP...</p>

<p>I know this guy [intl] whose writing and CR scores were in the 600s, but great math score, and 2400 in the subject tests and got into yale. As I said, this is not some formula, and tongue-in-cheek at that.</p>

<p>Whatever, she's got a great chance at any LAC.</p>
