If you are a semifinalist in Intel STS and Siemen's Westinghouse, or an Intel ISEF Finalist, how will that factor in admissions?

Bump
............

Pretty darn good i'd say.

ok, can you elaborate? Is it like a hook?

Sorry I can't. I don't really know much about it. Maybe someone else can help.

In that case, BUMP to the UMP to the MP to the P to the....

As long as you don't write or say "BUMP to the UMP to the MP to the P to the...." at any time during the admissions process, they'll think you're a really talented science research student, which is probably a hook.

oh really, I was gonna use that as my hook.....

Anyway, for real, is it a hook?

BUMP it
..................

i always thought a hook was something colleges needed to fill up their classes. it's really prestigious to win any one of these awards, the intel sts has been called the junior nobel prize, and adcoms know this, so it's a hook for them to take you in that sense. the tough part is winning, though. i really really really hope i win.

i meant semifinalist or finalist? not necessarily winning

it's definitely a big factor, even as a semifinalist.. only 300 kids are accepted, however the downside is intel sts results come after ed/ea deadlines.. westinghouse makes it so that applicants find out right before apps go out. of course, you could always send the info as an addendum, but anyway, to answer your question, even semifinalist is great. then again, it doesn't make you a shoo-in at all colleges. it probably helps a lot at MIT or Caltech or other heavy science colleges. try doing a search for siemends westinghouse or intel and you'll see there's a couple of threads that talk about this in more detail.

Gracias....I found out that if you are an INtel Finalist, Intel (or whoever) will talk with your first choice college.

So, I guess Intel Finliast can be considered a hook, but semifinalist cannot, but it is an amazing achievement nonetheless?

Semi is not a hook. The best sci hook is probably RSI. Everyone knoes teachers are driving many of the projects, RSI is you in the spotlight.

I think both semifinalist can be considered a hook. There aren't many people who become semifinalists, and it will definitely stand out on your application. Even if it's not a hook, it's nonetheless an extraordinary achievement and possibly a deciding factor.

suze, did you even go to RSI?

suze, what are you talking about? RSI isn't more of a hook than being an Intel Finalist.

What bothers me more is that you're talking about RSI as if it were some sort of admissions "holy grail" - the greatest thing that a high school student can accomplish - while at the same time having claimed on multiple threads that you personally attended RSI. I can't imagine any rickoid that I know being so arrogant about the program, especially not in such a singleminded and negative way.

So I'll ask you now, as I've asked you before (last time, you suddenly disappeared from the forum for two weeks): did you actually go to RSI? I know you weren't there this year, because 1) I would know you and 2) "suze" was posting straight through every important RSI event. So, if you're being truthful, the only possibility is that you attended a previous year (which would be pretty unusual, since you're a senior).

So, when did you attend RSI? Did you even really ever go?

By the way, your personal message box is full, so I can't talk to you there. But if you can't provide some explanation, you're going to lose whatever credibility you have.

Owned!!!!!!

Yeah.....ownage......If you don't answer now, then you definitely did not go to RSI.
