Intel Science Talent Search

I just found out that I made it to the semifinals of the Intel Science Talent Search. I don't think I've ever yelled in joy so loud before. Hopefully this, along with my semifinalist status for Siemens Westinghouse, can reverse my deferred status. Any other MIT hopefuls out there make it in?

Also, will the admissions office be reviewing the Intel semifinalists? Of course, I'm going to be sending a notification to all of my colleges, but its always nice to know. Also, anyone have any idea what emphasis they place on the competition? Thanks for your help.

that would be so amazingly fantastically ridiculously terrific. i have been slightly despressed ever since my deferral. if this reverses it i would easily have enough kinetic energy to hover over my two story house.

congrats! it'll definitely be a boost to your app, and if you make finalist, i believe STS actually calls you and arranges for you to be accepted into your top-choice school regardless of previous admissions decisions. so good luck... two more weeks til jan 26!

congratulations! If you get finalist, you will definitely get the nod from MIT, but one of my friends last year who applied to MIT early was deferred and got Intel semis, tho he was rejected RD.

Hey, situation is the same with me here. I found out yesterday and cried....I've been waiting since 6th grade for this.
Well, anyway, I dont want MIT to use this as a basis to judge my "deferred" status. I'm sure it will help, but what do you think about using it to give leverage to your application? Do you think its right? Also, do you plan on telling the other schools you may be applying to?

sDaLi - yes, of course you should tell all of the schools you are applying to that you have this! Why would you consider not telling? If you had been named a semifinalist before you applied, you certainly would have included it in your app.

wow, auto-admit, that is terrific

approximately 32 rickoids made it into semi :)

lol i think it's only auto-admit if you make it into finals...but good luck, definitely!

(and btw, what's a rickoid?)

"rickoid" refers to uber-intelligent kids that spent their summer at RSI @ either MIT or caltech

Hi...Um but how do you enter this Intel Science Talent Search? I'm from Las Vegas. I know I don't have a chance and this is the first time hearing about this. Maybe it's because I'm from Nevada, but I've never heard of any of these contests or summer programs such as ISTS, RSI, or the science olympiads. Well I just want to know the process of making it into this...do you work with a professor? How do you maintain lab equipments? and...just stuff like. I hope I don't sound ignorant or stupid...blah. Well thanks, good job in becoming a semifinalist, I'm sure MIT will reverse your defferal :).

go to th HIGH SCHOOL forum, and look for the "Research Science Institute 2005" thread that has been seen 19,000 times

oh..hehe sorry ^__^;;

thanx

radicalchar - here's a list of competitions:

You just have to go to the sites of individual ones and read the rules about how to get involved. If you are interested in Intel specifically, that link is:

wait doesn't intel send out notices to the colleges you've applied to saying you're a finalist?

why would they need to? colleges can just look at the published list

when I got the semifinalist packet, i thought it said something about sending an update to the schools you're applying to. then they asked for a list of your schools. I figured thats what it was for.
