that is completely based on my own perceptions not any official ranking. and i feel obliged to give you the "it matters what field you want to go into" speech. i.e., cornell is really good for engineering and hotel management, tufts is good for IR, etc. so it really does depend on that stuff... because you are probably better off getting an english degree from swarthmore than from cornell, etc.

keep it comin'...

It would be much more effective for you to check out the US News &World Report or equivalent ranking system if you're really looking for this prestige list, Stanmarsh.

Doesn't exactly correspond with USNews rankings...just my own opinion...

I don't understand why everyone is putting Duke above Cornell. Cornell is an ivy and therefore has "more prestige" than Duke. Even if Duke is a better school with lower acceptance rates I am sure that it is more known throughout the world than Duke. If you mention Duke in Alaska very few people know what you are even talking about. You mention Cornell and everyone immediately thinks ivy league.

I would put
Cornell
Duke
University of Virginia
Tufts

Don't really know a lot about the others.

Exactly. That's why I put it over Duke.

And by the way, only goyim put mayo on rye bread. Eww...another gentile corruption of a tasty Jewish food.

it's a south park reference

any more opinions?

And Duke is still better.

Perhaps, but Cornell is more prestigious.

Duke University

I think Duke (to anyone who really knows) is above Cornell but I'm shocked everyone put Swathmore so low. It is way harder to get into than Cornell, and by definition, that's what makes a school elite. Ask this question on the parent's board (they know) and Swat will probably be on top.

Ivy is an athletic conference, pilebay. Granted, the schools in the Ivy league are prestigious, but being in the Ivy League is not, in and of itself, a reason why an institution should be considered better than a non-member.

Duke
Cornell
Swarthmore
Tufts
UVa
W&M
Wake Forest
U of MD
Lafayette

Schools like Stanford, Duke, Oxford, IIT, UCLA, Rice, Cooper Union, MIT are amazing schools despite not being IVY. Being non ivy doesn't equal being any less prestigious.

I never said that ivy schools were better than all the other American schools. I know this more than anyone since I will be attending Rice in the fall and in my belief it is better than all of the ivy's put together. The OP however, asked to put the schools in order of "prestige" and I still firmly believe that the ivy league (even if some of their schools are easier to get into than Duke) are more prestigious nationally and internationally than any other American schools. By no means does this make them better it only makes them more recognizable. Besides the term "Ivy League" has taken on an entirely different meaning than just an "athletic conference". It is a term that all Americans have to come to understand as being the really great American universities. It is also the Ivy League that will be recognized throughout the world. I actually believe that Duke, Georgetown, and Rice are better than Cornell (they all have lower acceptance rates than Cornell anyway). But I still hold firm on my statement that Cornell is more prestigious.

I think that way too many people are using the U.S. News and World Report to rank the schools on this thread. Just look at most international listings and Cornell is above Duke.

But I won't pretend to be an expert. That is just my opinion and I could very well be wrong.
