On the JHU app do you report intended major and does it have any affect on the chance of you getting in? More specifically, I am thinking about applying to either an economics or philosophy major, and was wondering if this could help me as Hopkins is more focused on the sciences.
The BME department is the only department at Hopkins which admits undergrads into the program. If you indicate that your intended major is anything other than BME it will have no direct effect on your admissions chances.
I’m sure the school keeps general numbers in mind when creating each class for reaching internal quotas for science majors and humanities majors, but I don’t think it necessarily will help you picking one major over another (besides BME, which you should assume you won’t be able to transfer into). Don’t forget the average undergrad will change his major 2-3 times officially (let alone the internal struggles), so schools hardly put much emphasis on trying to create perfectly sized departments based on resources, but they do want a class with some balance. At the end of the day though normally the top-10 most popular majors at the School of Arts and Sciences include Writing Seminars, International Relations, English, History, Political Science and Economics - hardly just a science-dominated school, so it’s not like being a non-science major (or feigning being one) is going to be a significant boost, if any.
