Intensity of ID program and scholarships for OOS students?

My son is a rising senior and seems to be interested in some sort of design-game, industrial, etc. He's a strong student with a 2230 on the SAT (1480 CR+M), 3.95/4.48 GPA, and he'll have about 40 dual-enrolled college units when he graduates. He has a few national honors/awards and some very strong ECs in cello and robotics. Most of his free time is spent in his own design stuff, but nothing major, though he'll have a portfolio of animation for other schools. He always has ideas for new products.

His big negative is that he's pretty low energy. Do I understand correctly that the ID program is majorly intense? Is there no way to make it a bit less intense so someone can actually get a healthy amount of sleep?

Also, are there any OOS parents/kids on this forum who can speak on the topic of scholarships for OOS students? Without the possibility of scholarship, I don't know that it's worth his applying. We qualify for a lot of need-based aid at top schools, but not as an OOS resident.

Thanks.

My son just finished up his freshman year in ID. The program is very rigorous and on average he was getting 5 hours a night sleep… When projects were due he’d get about 2-3 hours a night in. This seemed pretty common for the DAAP students. Your son has really good stats that I would think would qualify him got a Cincinnatus scholarship which renews annually and has extra dollars for OOS. If you search on the UC website it will show various amounts awarded.

Thanks for the feedback, momofdesignkid. With that little sleep, this would not be a good fit for my son, unfortunately, but it’s good to know this upfront. My son needs a lot more sleep than that. He probably needs to find a less intense design program.
