Intensive Chem over summer?

I believe that both Northwestern and Harvard offer an intensive inorganic chem program over the summer, essentially two full semester's worth packed into a not-so-fun summer. (Don't ask why.)

Are there any other colleges that offer something similar?

Are you looking for summer classes for HS students? Or current college students?

college-level course for college students, menloparkmom.

USC does - CHEM | USC Schedule of Classes

I looked at U of Chicago too, but they seem to only offer organic chem in the summer.

As a chemistry major from eons ago- it sounds like a good idea if the student wants it. I once had an organic lab that was Fri pm/Sat am (9 hours, 2 credits) and the best part was leaving equipment set up overnight. At the HS level there is AP Chemistry done in 3 weeks at WCATY. It can be easier to focus on one subject and learn it. The biggest downside is summer on a campus can be rather distracting. A chemistry class sounds like lecture plus problem sets/discussion and maybe lab, as well as exams, there would be some variety in the days as well as discrete bits of concrete knowledge to help one keep focused/on task.

I think for those with a heavy science load, getting 2 classes out of the way in the summer is nice. It allows them to free up some time during the year to either take some electives, or if medical school is in the future, to have time to study for the MCAT.

My son took one lab course during a short summer session so that he didn't have to have two lab sciences and his MCAT all at the same time. While he could have handled the full schedule, he welcomed the break.

Years ago, UMass-Boston did this as well. I took Bio 2, Org chem 1 and Org Chem 2 all in one summer. It was pretty much full-time school during the second half of the summer. I think one class met all morning, and the other met all afternoon. Every day.

Also years ago, Dartmouth College offerred this. Since they're on the trimester, it's likely still happening. You don't need to be a Dartmouth undergrad to partake.

Plenty of publics offer summer sessions. Here is the link to the UW Summer chemistry offerings (including Inorganic Chem 312 and Inorganic Chem. Lab 317):

The class sizes are generally smaller in the summer, and the TAs are a bit more relaxed :)

bunsenburner: yeah, I see where any colleges do offer summer courses which are open to everyone. But the the key is being able to fulfill one year of chem over the summer. For example, the UCs offer two summer schedules, but they only covers two quarters' worth of chem, not a full year (three quarters). In the case of UW, the goal would be to complete 142-152-162 (or 120-220-221 sequence) over the summer.

eg1: UMass-Boston was (almost) perfect, thanks. The classes are there, but unfortunately, start too early.

"But the the key is being able to fulfill one year of chem over the summer."
those 2 classes at USC comprise a full year of chem classes. [ wish my son had researched this earlier- he might have taken those classes this summer instead of taking them plus 3 other science classes and labs over the past 2 semesters]

Bluebayou, check Berkeley's summer program. The inorganic chemistry courses you'd be looking for are Chem 104A and Chem 104B.

Heh...one number lower than USC's

ooh, thanks. But, gosh, UCB, my kids know how we feel about any shade of red in our house. :D

I also found that the other west coast 'SC, (Santa Clara) also offers a bunch of intensive courses (for anyone else who might be interested).

bluebayou, my bad, I thought you were looking for inorganic chemistry (it sounds like you need a year-long general chemistry course packed into 2 summer months).

Maybe UCI, I see 51A, 51B(Session 1), 51C(Session 2)
https://summer.uci.edu/courses/index.aspx?i=270&action=topic

UW= Madison for me- you (and I) have to be more precise on the noncollege specific forums. No wonder the course #s didn't seem right... Wisconsin or Washington...

Also, do you mean general/intro chemistry, or inorganic which refers to an upper level course for majors? That is what I assumed, I was surprised to see a 2 semester course, and being offered in the summer.

If a general chemistry course is wanted- sounds great. There would be a mix of lecture, lab and discussion, enough variety you don't feel like you're stuck in a lecture hall all summer. "Instant" feedback to reinforce concepts. Organic would work well also.

yes bunsen burner, looking for a year-long course (packed into summer) that would replace Frosh chem (which in the old days was named 'inorganic' at my college; organic was typically Soph year).

Columbia: the UCs will enable you to take two of the three quarters, but not all three (cuz there's only two summer sessions).

will take a look-see at Madison, Wis.

Just make sure that you college will ACCEPT the credits from another school. Santa Clara University does offer a lot of courses in the summer (DD took a full year of O'chem....three terms...three weeks each) last summer. There were a LOT of students from other schools taking these courses. The prices are significantly reduced from the regular hourly tuition. Oddly...SCU will NOT allow matriculated students to transfer ANY courses towards their degrees from other colleges. If they had...DD would have come home to take OChem. So..make sure you check...before you enroll.

excellent advice, thumper. How did your D like SCU?
