i don't think conservatism is not the influence on beliefs. I think what posters are mistaking white-southern racism, for conservatism since many people in the south are staunch conservatives. Im a moderate and find it fine, and my parents and siblings, who are very conservative, think it is fine also. I think a lot of it just has to do with the mentality of the people within a geographical location.

Also, usually Ivy leagues are very diverse, so u would figure people wouldnt care for the most part. As for schools that are majority white, you might be a bit more concerned.

Im from california so i find interacial dating to be quite normal and appropriate (i live in a diverse area...for the most part). But then again, much of northern california is pretty un segragated. Southern california is less so, but i believe still tolerant (although there is an obvious cultural segragation with immigrants no immigrants and whatnot.)

And City Girls mom, you do realize that america is one of few places where interacial dating is even possible right?
I mean there are european countries that are becoming diverse, but the US trumps all other countries in diversity...even though many people in the US are still untolerant of others. But some parts they are, such as the west coast and some east coast cities.

But yeah, it is pretty sad that racist biggots cant get over mixed races. Ive seen a lot of beautiful looking, non-white people in my 17 years of living, so i couldnt be racist.

BIGTWIX: Uh, not really you don't. Many European countries are more diverse, and closer to home, your neighbours to the North (aka Canada) are more diverse as a whole, and in a much more truly diverse (i.e. patchwork quilt of cultures where cultures maintain their own identity rather than the melting pot assimilation of America - not that the assimilation idea is bad) way than the US.

For comparison, Toronto (largest city in Canada) has been the most ethnically diverse city in the world, 5 years in a row.

Canada > US in diversity, but I still say that the US is far better in diversity, multi-ethnic acceptance, integration, and lack of racism then Europe. This is especially for the west and east coast (and parts of Texas); but not so much in the "heart land."

It really depends on how you define "diversity."

The US has a larger minority population than Canada, if you lump all whites in Canada together. Remember, if you start separating all the different ethnic groups that constitute "white," then the US could probably become incredibly diverse.

I think Canada and the US use different definitions of "visible minority." Furthermore, how is a city the "most diverse?"

A city's diversity is generally measured by the percentage of foreign born inhabitants. I think Miami actually has a higher percentage of foreign born inhabitants than Toronto, but they mostly come a single very small region, which detracts from the overall diversity of the city. Toronto's foreign born citizens are truly from all over the world.

I think the American idea of diversity refers to color (probably due to not-so-distant history) while the Canadian and European idea of diversity refers to internationalism. So Americans would consider a city with lots of US born black and asian people very diverse. Canadians and Europeans would shake their heads at this because if all those different colored people were born and raised in the USA, then there really isn't much diversity becuase they all come from the same country and national culture (regardless of somewhat varying subcultures that exist in every society anyway).

Anyway, inter-racial dating and stuff. I think many non-white girls are beautiful.
But then again, i hate that whole blonde hair blue eyes thing. I like Dark hair. Not blonde or red.

many asian and mediterranean cultures with strong patriarchal sense and tradition are not thrilled about marrying their children to foreigners. it's only the northern europeans who are open to the concept of inter-racial marriage...perhaps this is so for the germanics lusted for the welath and beauty of rome and other older cilvizations of asia and have desired nothing mroe than to mix.

but ont he whole, i think a relationship between dark-haired man and brunette is far more likelier even if the brun is a black person. many blonds marry blondes....

america is very conservative not only on inter-racial marriage, but on sex norms.

I personally am more attracted to members of my own race on the whole, but am equally attracted to some members of certain other races. However, if I had a white friend that was more attracted to other races, or equally attracted, and was in an interracial relationship, I wouldn't bat an eye.

Whats the book about? I almost picked it up just cause i took a highschool summer course at UCHICAGO this summer and it was at the bookstore and i saw its popularity status and cool cover, and that it was by one of the professors there.

Just so everyone knows, not all Southerners are racist bigots. I'm a white girl, Alabama born and raised, and I have absolutely no issue with other races or inter-racial dating. I have American friends of other races as well as international friends and acquaintances. My last ex-boyfriend wasn't white (international student from Honduras), and I would date other races as well if I was attracted to the guy. So don't be afraid to come here, we're not all bad!
