So I just spoke to my advisor and she told me I am unable to change my major ever again due to my having to get readmitted after being disqualified (I am in a much better place now). On my readmissions application I put Interdisciplinary studies because at the time I wasn’t completely sure if I wanted to do accounting or finance so I figured why not do both so I can have the ability to do both as a career. Unfortunately, I feel like I made a mistake because after going on indeed and looking at their qualifications for certain accounting or finance jobs, I noticed they only want one or the other. Also, I feel like I should have just chosen the accounting major on my application. Did I just ruin my chances at getting any accounting job with my choice? Is an interdisciplinary studies degree worthless even if it is a major in accounting and finance with a minor in entrepreneur? Should I just apply for a different school? What job do you think I can get with this? What would be your advice? Thank you!
@happy1 might have valuable input.
Were you going to try to become a CPA?
IMO the devil is in the details so unless we know the coursers involved in the interdisciplinary program, the school etc. then it is hard to know how things can play out for the OP in terms of job opportunities.
I can say that my son’s friend did an interdisciplinary accounting/finance major at Fordham and was then able to go on to get a one year MS in Accounting there. After the MS degree he got a BIg 4 accounting job and his CPA. Keep in mind that to become a CPA now you need 150 credits (and most bachelors programs are about 120 credits) so it is common to go on for a one year Masters in Accounting.
If the OP wants to work in a corporate environment, then he/she may be hireable with the interdisciplinary major but it would really depend on the coursework taken, what companies recruit at the college etc… I’d recommend that the OP go to career services at the school to get ideas of how people in that major ended up in terms of jobs.
Congrats to the OP for getting him/herself in a better place and moving forward in such a positive direction.
The school is ucf and I would like a corporate environment. Im not into being a CPA though, I’d much rather a lowkey, routine, same thing everyday type job. Something that pays well but not much travel. What else do you think I’d be able to do with that sort of degree? I really do enjoy accounting.
I think your best bet would be to talk to career services at ucf and see where people who earned that degree have been hired.
