Major dilemma!! Accounting majors please help

Hello there!

So I am in a HUGE dilemma with my major at the moment. I am currently in my 6th semester at Georgia State University and had decided on pursuing a BA in Psychology and had planned on graduating either spring of 2012 or fall of 2012.... Now I am really going against psychology because I don't have much interest in it to do this for the rest of my life!! This lead for me to search other majors and here I come to a conclusion I want to major in Accounting and minor in Finance. I haven't taking any Business courses as of yet and plan to begin on it this summer. Now, do you think there is any hope in me graduating with this degree by the end of fall 2012??
Is it too late for me to change majors? I will be losing 33 credits but most were taken at a community college where tuition was cheaper so I think I can bear that... :/

I don't have any extracurricular activies / internships / etc.
My GPA isn't at its best and plan to bring it up each semester.

here are my questions/concerns in order:
1. Should I go ahead and get my degree of a BA in Psych and go for a masters in Accounting with a minor in Finance(if that is possible)
2. Or Should I just go ahead and switch my major now and try to get my 120 credits in and go for my MAcc for the remaining 30 credits.
3. I always wanted to go to a big name school but just had been lazy about it and not so bright in high school... but I really want to go to a big name school... should I do that for my masters if whatever I plan to choose as my bachelors? How can I go to a big name school [if I get in, that is] now?
4. Also, learning about acct and finance careers, I found out about the Big 4, what do you think I would exactly have to do for a chance to work with them or is it best that I get my degree or whatever and go to a small firm and then try to switch to the Big 4 with good work experience?

Do you think I'm being unrealistic, dreaming of this degree now and still graduating in time or even just a semester late?

if only someone had told me really to decide for a major in my freshman year as that would've been much more beneficial because its hard to start from sophmore/junior year and I'm already almost done with junior year. :( If only!

Honestly, what do you think my plan should be from now on.

ANY advice/suggestions/help will be GREATLY, GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!

My son is getting a Masters of Accounting and he did not major in accounting. The requirements for a MAcc vary quite a bit. His program required four semesters of accounting by the time you finished undergrad, and you could apply after finishing three.

I’d sugget finding some schools that offer the MAcc that’d you’d be interested in attending and seeing exactly what the requirements are. That will help you focus on what you can and cannot accomplish in the next few semesters.

If you are nearing the end of your undergrad education, I would also recommend getting a MACC in accounting.

Thanks so much for the replies!!
So I would be better off If I continue with my psych degree and then for my masters I can go for MAcc? Does an MAcc for someone with no business background harder/longer?
Also for an accounting degree[BA or MAcc], would this be something useful in humanitarian work abroad? I have been really looking into interning/volunteering abroad and would love the opportunity but a lot of is generalized in categories of caring, healthcare, and education.
what do you think i should do?

Once again, thanks in advance, any advice/suggestion is appreciated!

I’m a psych major too due to graduate next spring. I just realized it’s something I don’t want to do for the rest of my life either and wish I figured it out earlier. The thing holding me back from changing majors is because when I transfered to the university, I had all the pre-req’s for psychology. Business/Accounting had way more pre-reqs from community college- and some of the stuff you can’t take in the same semester if it’s math or something. If that makes sense. So I’ve been researching online about it and I guess there are post baccalaureate certificates in accounting that I was considering doing. So I was considering doing that instead of basically starting over at school. I’m not sure if it’s the best option though. Like at my school there is no accounting major- only business with a concentration in accounting. So first I was considering for now adding a general minor in business (which includes 2 accounting classes-so even then I’d graduate spring '13) and then going back for a second bachelors in accounting, but since that would say it’s a business degree i think it’d be silly to have a minor in business and then a second bachelors in business and a concentration in accounting?

haha i wrote so much- but I can really relate. Good luck on your decision! =)

Thanks for sharing your story, we seem to be on the same boat!
Im still confused but I might just stick to Psych and go from there because I have taken many courses that won’t apply to a business major :(

I assume that you suppose to have approximately 80-90 credits, and if I were you, I would change my major to accounting. By doing that, you can achieve the accounting degree within 2 years, and have enough credits for the CPA exam. If you change your major, you will probably be able to apply your psychology classes to a psychology minor, and not waste any time. The masters in accounting may take up to 2 years, if a person does not have an undergraduate business degree.

If you choose masters: it may take you 3 years to complete, and more money to spend.

Bachelors: faster, and cheaper.

Masters doesn’t take 3 years.

^In his case it may take 3 years because he is a junior right now. (1 year to complete a bachelors, and 2 years for masters)
On the other hand, if he opts to change his major to accounting, he will probably spend only 2 years for his bachelors, and will already have 150 credits. That was my point :)

Masters in accounting doesn’t take 2 years.

Did u decide on what you were going to do? I was considering changing majors and I looked up what I needed to transfer from community college as a pre-business major and it was

Financial Accounting, MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING , Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, MODERN BUSINESS MATH , and 3 one unit computer literacy classes such as excel.

I was thinking to graduate w/ psych asap- and then do an accounting bachelors but I checked and my school doesn’t accept 2nd bachelors students- so it’s either change it or double major if I want the degree…
