Interested in many different things... Help!

Hi everybody.
I’m currently on my summer break before senior year and I want to start college apps, but I have no idea what career field I want to go into and I don’t want to apply anywhere undecided. My problem is that I like too many things.
I’ve always had a passion for animals ((I volunteered at a shelter 18 hours a week for 3-4 years, give or take a few weeks throughout (but I never got credit, sadly)). Anyway, I had thought I wanted to be a vet, even a shelter vet, or a zoologist, or… or… I don’t know. If I choose this field, I’d want a job where I will be working hands-on with animals, but I can’t seem to find many that peak my interest.
Then there’s writing! I really enjoy writing, but I don’t know what I could do with an English major, aside from publishing books (I don’t want to be a journalist). I’d love to be an author if I could, but I find the rate of success a little too… Well, it just isn’t very reassuring, and I don’t think it’s necessarily “MY BIG DREAM” that I should take a chance for.
Lastly, I’m really interested in following the news/politics. I’m specifically intrigued by matters pertaining to civil rights, but the only career I could think of was a civil rights lawyer(?).

How did you guys decide your majors? I just don’t know how to choose (mostly between pursuing some sort of veterinary study or law study, unless I find other careers options that pertain to those interests besides those).
Have any of you also been in this situation, and if so, how did you know which path felt right? And if anyone knows any career paths that relate to animals or civil rights aside from a vet or lawyer, could you leave it below, please?

Thank you guys.

I think we need more information on what you are good at. The only thing I can pick out along those lines is that it worked well for you serving at the animal shelter or you wouldn’t have done it for so long.

Also I think it is likely you will find more interests by the time you really have to declare a major. It’s hard for you to know what’s best for yourself until you have more information. I would suggest as a college freshman taking a biology class and a political science class that meet general education requirements to see how interested you are and how well you do in those areas.

I liked my high school biology and proposed being a biologist. When I got to college as part of my bio preparation I took a chemistry course. I found I liked it a lot (much more than high school chemistry) and, considering its job prospects better than those for biology, I switched to chemistry. It made sense to be flexible.
