Hey all, so I’m really having trouble choosing what to major in or even do with my life. Currently I’m living with at my parent’s house and taking gen eds at community college. I attended university for one year as a vet tech major but I withdrew for a number of reasons, mostly because the coursework was too intensive for me to handle and I didn’t have enough confidence in myself to communicate with any of my professors. The community college that I’m currently attending has a vet tech program that I was considering applying to, but now I’m hesitating because the pay as a vet tech isn’t very good and I’m anxious that I won’t have enough confidence to do my practicums or communicate with my professors again.
Because of this I’m trying to reconsider my major, and see if I really want to be a vet tech, but I honestly just draw a blank at the question “Well what do you want to do?”. The truth is that I don’t really know what I want to do at all. I’ve been diagnosed with moderate-severe depression and while I manage it somewhat well I don’t really have any energy left in the day for hobbies or passions. When I’m not working, in class, driving, or cooking, I’m usually asleep. I originally majored in veterinary technology at uni because that’s what I went to high school for and it seemed like the natural progression of things, and I originally went to high school for animal science/vet tech because I (sadly enough) wanted to hang out with cows and pet dogs during the school day. Does anybody have any advice or has anyone had any similar experiences?
To be honest, I don’t think I really have any. I work late hours so I spend most of my time sleeping. When I’m awake I’ll usually read, play video games, or surf the internet… and I don’t think I can make a career out of those.
Go to your college’s career center and talk to them. They may have tests/tools that help you figure out what career (and therefore major) is best for you)
What classes do you prefer? Science/Math? English/History?
Talk to the professor/teacher in your favorite class and see what they think
Pre-med/sociology/public health/psychology are majors where you want to help people directly.
Business/engineering/comp sci are majors where you want to solve technical/organizational problems.
Which is more appealing to you?
No, not necessarily. I was a psychology major with a graduate degree in public health and I solve technical/organizational problems, and I know lots of other social science majors who do as well. Conversely, I know plenty of business, engineering, and computer science majors who help people directly. It depends on what you do with the major, not the major itself.
