Interested in Syracuse

Hey all,

I'm fairly new here. I'm interested in pursuing a broadcast journalism-type major and Syracuse's Newhouse seems like a great option. I also am a HUGE basketball fan, and not that i would make a college choice based on athletics, but that six overtime great was incredible and really got me interested and the more i researched the more i learned about syracuse.

But i've read mixed reviews from forums such as this one and other ones. The negatives for me from what i've read are:

a) it's a party school and the frat houses rule all (i'm not a huge partyer, so if this is the only social thing to do, that would be a negative)
b) there is not much to do in the surrounding area
c) the food sucks
d) it's full of rich, snobby, socially exclusive white kids
e) you can't understand the professors

I love cold weather, so that's not going to be much of a problem for me.

Can anyone tell me anything about the things i've listed, whether they're actually true or not, etc... Syracuse seems like a great school, but i'm not interested in going somewhere where there's nothing to do and no one sober to hang out with, even if they have an excellent broadcasting program.

a) Wrong! Yes Syracuse parties but we study as hard as we party. Trust me. And no, fraternitys do not rule nor do they run the school.

b) Like every other college, it depends on which dining hall you go to. Syracuse’s food to me is quite alright. Not extraordinarily scrumptious but its ok.

d) Like every other school that cost 50k a year, you will find your share of rich, snobby, socially exclusive kids in general.

e) What college doesn’t have professors that you cannot understand but those professors do not dominate at Syracuse. It is only a small percentage to be quite honest. I personally have not had a hard to understand pofessor as of yet.

I will agree that Syracuse the city cannot compare to NYC but the University alone always keep you quite busy as well as entertained.

I’m interested in this subject as well. I know there are always rich/snobby kids at private schools but I hear about it to the extreme when it comes to Syracuse U. Can anyone offer more perspectives?
