Interesting Course Schedules

sagar, how does trimesters work at NCSSM? my cuz use to go there but I have always wondered how u can take 3 math classes in one year...damn my school sucks..btw where do u want to go MIT?

My school doesn't offer many AP classes. No honors either. With 500 kids, and more than half needing "step-up" classes designed for Junior High School students there is little variety. However, i've always been a year ahead in Math, Science and Spanish(although i'm better at English and History, go figure :P).

I'll just do this years schedule:

English 6
BioMedicalTechnology 2
SAT Prep(1st Semester only, traded for Dance)
Science Research(1st Semester only, traded for BioMed 3)
BioMedicalTechnology 3
Precalculus
AP World History
Dance

Yeah I wanna go to MIT. Your cousin use to go there? What class? Are you applying here?

Wow, how can most of you guys take AP Calc BC frosh year? You have no where else to go; are you done? You haven't completed four years math, though!

I followed AP Calculus BC with Honors Multivariate Calculus/Honors Linear Algebra, Honors Differential Equations/Honors Advanced Topics in Mathematics, and AP Statistics...so I got my four years in :).

I wonder if the Ivies appreciate numbers or passion more?

cooljoe,

I don't know for sure. I suspect it may have to do with the style of the particular Ivy. Brown has the reputation anyway of being more holistic in looking at students. This is where my daughter got in, with the ACT test and a homeschool transcript without grades except for a couple Brown courses. But she had passion in spades, with correspondence courses in her prospective field, a recommendation from a professional, and work samples. The field also happened to be one of Brown's little niche departments. (Her application also found favor at U Chicago.) However, Yale and Penn denied her. Then again her personality fits better at Brown, so she got in the right place.

If I were to go out on a limb, I would speculate that Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, being harder to get into, are more numbers driven. Penn (which a professor there who shall go nameless once told me) has a bit of an inferiority complex and so wants the numbers of its admitted students to be up there too.

Perhaps others have studied all the Ivies in more detail with respect to their admission policies. My daughter simply studied what she wanted in high school and applied to the colleges that had what she wanted to study in college. Her only nod to competitiveness was taking math every year. Even so, I couldn't convince her to do an AP-level calculus course, so we did a year of applied statistics and calculus using texts for nonmajors.

Nice post--thanks, DianeR.

I'm a junior right now. My AP Chem. teacher is offering Organic Chemistry next year, but I can't decide if I want to go through with it. Have any of you taken organic as a high school student? If so, how was your experience with it?

Famisheternity, how did you learn chem HONORS over the summer? Did you go to summer school?

Oh, I should've clarified that I took chem honors AT northwestern's CTD equinox summer program.
