Interesting looking app

(I'm a junior)
Hey everyone! I'm looking at the top schools minus HYPS and those types of schools. Mainly LAC's like Claremont McKenna, Pomona, Amherst, and then a few others (Brown, UCLA, Dartmouth).

I have about a 3.7 weighted GPA and an unweighted of 3.5. My class doesn't rank but I'm not very high at all on the decile (like top 40). My school is a really good public though and the student typically go to ivy's/equivalents (somewhere around top 20 percent give or take). My schedule was the most rigorous, but it was still somewhat rigorous.

My SAT was somewhat decent for a first time (2010). I'm retaking it in May in order to get it higher.

Here is where it gets interesting... I'm going to be a recruited athlete. I have excellent, VERY GOOD leadership experience. Captain of varsity sports team since sophomore, president of many clubs, did some unique volunteering, and will most likely be coaching (or helping) coach a special olympics team.
One of my immediate family members (sister) we have had trouble with and that person died this year, so obviously it affected me heavily which can explain the lowish grades.
I'm a white and very well off financially.

I was just curious if even though my grades and sat is not right on target for most schools if I could get acceptances at some due to my extracurriculars, my athletic status, and the hardships I have gone through.

Thanks for your input!

I am so sorry to hear about your sister’s death. I hope you have had time to grieve and to start to heal.

Thank a lot, it’s tough but I’m getting through it. I live in a very supportive community so that’s helped tremendously!

I also want to wish you the best. I hope you and your family are healing.

I think you stand a good chance. This is the type of situation where lowish grades can be overlooked. That said, you do need to be prepared to work hard this semester and get a higher gpa/sat.

Your GPA is on the low side for WAY top schools, but your SAT is good so that will help offset that, especially given the circumstances. As for being a recruited athlete, it depends on which sport and how much the coach wants you but that might give you an edge as well.

Thanks alwaysleah. I’m trying to work on that right now.

mcollegemom-I’m being recruited for a non-revenue generating sport that’s probably lowish priority. The coaches who I have talked to seem to like me a lot (we’ve been talking about official visits for next year). I was mainly worried about my low gpa barring me from getting into some of the top schools. I also think I can raise my SAT too because I didn’t study to much for the first one so hopefully some more preparation will help.
