Interesting SAT Troubles

Hello, everybody. I've read the posts on these forums for quite awhile, but this will be my first post here on CC.

I'm having a lot of trouble with the math problems on the SAT. I either run out of time on the test, make careless errors, or fail to find a method to solve the problems.

The results for my last test:

800 W
760 CR
560 M

As you can probably guess, I'm happy with the other scores, but the math section poses major problems for me. Right now, I'm at a complete loss. I don't know how or what to study, or how to manage my time on the test.

My ideal goal would be a 650 or above on the math section. Could anyone help me out? I take the test again in a few months. How can I prepare? Are there any books that I should read or specific concepts that I should study?

Thanks.

first, it depends on how good you are in math in general. do you get A's in honors math classes?

my suggestion is to do a lot of practice with a teacher or someone who can do SAT math well. if you score lower because of things you don't know, you should use a math review book to read over different definitions and equations and stuff.

be glad. most of us crave a 800W and 760CR

Amen to that

The math in the SAT doesn't require you to know a lot of advanced math; much of it is just problem solving. Besides having a strong grasp of the concepts, all you need is practice; they can only have so many types of questions before they start reusing the same ones with variations.

The Math section is undoubtedly the easiest. All you need to do is gain knowledge of the concepts that are required for SAT Math. Since you've got 760 and 800 on the other two sections you shouldn't have any problems with the concepts. As far as time management is concerned, you should try out tricks that help you get your answers quicker.
Just practice alot and you'll be fine.

I got the same problem. Would colleges consider the math score less if you were majoring in something like say... philosophy?

I don't think most colleges take into considering what you want to major in because they want to give you the opportunity to explore various majors before you settle down with one.

Don't worry too much if math's your weakest section, it's easier to improve on it than the other ones because the math is so simple and you've probably done most of it in class before. After you understand the concepts all it takes is familiarity with the question types. Remember to double-check to make sure you're answering what the question is asking for, it's so easy to make stupid mistakes on math questions.

just do a lot of questions and go over them, that's what i did straight for two months and i got a high score in math.

yea man...i think you should be able to pull up that math score easily. I've been getting 750+ but am no longer A student in mathematics at my school.

On the other hand...I would kill for a 700 in verbal. always stuck around 650 range...if you could help me, provide any suggestions or advise, that would be super.

I think any prep book with the essential math concepts listed will be helpful, such as CB Blue Book, but that's just my opinion.

Good Luck~
