My D (Junior in HS) is interested in design. She has some interest in interior design, but also is interested in sustainability and product design. She has a 3.6 GPA but has not tested that well on her SAT's so far (strong on the math, weak on the English). I believe she would do better in a non-competitive environment that encourages her to grow. She does not have a portfolio at this point. She has 3 years of High school architecture and is strong in CAD. Looking at the Cornell Design Immersion summer program. Her main extracurricular activity is dance and she would be looking for a college where she can continue that (not as a major). Would welcome your college thoughts. She is open minded and liberal and although the south seems attractive to her, I am worried about it being too conservative.

You may be interested in Kansas State. K-State has an excellent design program in the School of Architecture and Design and is ranked well in the 2012 Design Intelligence Surveys. It’s also ranked well in US News, Fisks and Petersons.

Kansas State is rather conservative which is why my dd selected it but it’s a friendly place and there is room for all. The program is selective but the atmosphere is cooperative rather than cut-throat. K-State does not require portfolios and will not consider them in the admissions process. It also has a dance program. My daughter is a ballerina and wanted to be able to continue to dance. Good luck!

She should definitely look into Arizona State, as well as Southern Methodist

I forgot to add that the program is a non-baccalaurate 5 year and leads a Master’s degree.

I will definitely look into these schools!
