Interlochen

I want to apply to Interlochen but I was wondering if anyone has actually done an audtion there? what would they suggest?(any tips at all). I play trumpet <3 and really want to get in for this, but I also write a bit, though i'm not all that amazing. What about the academic program??
What about athletics-----!!!!!! THEY DON'T HAVE ANY!!!(except like only school-wide Intermurral programs) This is really sad for me since I'm amazing at cross-country.

My daughter went to Interlochen for her last two years of high school. The academics are very strong. She went to Interlochen from a top private school and didn't feel as though she gave up anything academically. Some of her Interlochen classmates were not as focused on academics, of course, since they chose to pursue a straight performance track post-high school.
The school should give you guidelines for the audition. Interlochen is a magical place. Let me know if you have any questions. I can send you my daughter's email address. She is a senior at Rice (vocal performance).

Forgot to add- there are some intermural sports. Many of the kids were really good at soccer (especially the Europeans)> If you like to run, you will find lots of places to run there. I ran up there myself. It's gorgeous. You could probably enter some local road races.

Oh! Thanks! Everyone makes it sound so amazing!!! I really want to go!!
What about FA?? anyone have any idea?

SOMEONE POST A REPLY!!!!!! I'M SOOO BORED OF WAITING! just kidding but please do...

From the IAA Website:

No student or family should be discouraged from applying to Interlochen Arts Academy because of lack of funds. We welcome a broad cross section of families who believe in their children and in their ability to succeed.
Interlochen’s commitment to a diverse, talented and highly motivated student body translates into an institutional commitment far greater than most independent schools to help deserving students and families have access to the high quality, unique education and experience that is Interlochen Arts Academy.
We offer considerable financial aid, based on three criteria:
The financial need of the family
The artistic and academic ability of the student
The enrollment needs of the academy
Approximately 70% of the Academy student body receives some kind of financial aid. In comparison, according to the National Association of Independent Schools most recent survey (2004-2005), most independent schools provide only 30% of financial aid to their students.

actually we do have a competitive soccer team, we go to other schools and play against them and usually win haha. IAA is kind of notorious for giving FA to everyone, but now enough to the people who really really need it. but it is truly the most amazing experience ever. i'm here right now, if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Trumpet player, eh frenchvanilla?

If you were only a violist who had good intonation, you'd be a shoo-in for FA at Interlochen... LOL

For those of you non-musicians, that was a viola joke. Violists are the butt of most musician jokes (occasional french horn jokes aside).

By the way...

My tagname is goaliedad and I'm a violist... (so I can crack these jokes)

Jokes aside, Frenchvanilla, at least Interlochen is upfront about FA being a mixture of (your) need, talent, and (their) need (for specific talents).

I don't know about your level of talent and musical resume, but having come from a family of musicians (1 of whom makes his living playing and teaching string bass), the competition for musical education scholarships is intense.

There is a lot of good young talent out there. I began playing in university orchestras in 9th grade and was playing paying gigs before I had my drivers license (thank goodness for older brothers who could drive and play the same shows). I chose not to pursue a career in the business as it became less fun as a job (too much pressure to perform at too high of a level with too few rehearsals).

Your private teacher should be able to help you with preparing for such an audition, should you want to try out for Interlochen. Start now.

There does seem to be a lack of good violists around and a surplus of good violinists, doesn't there?

When do I do the audtion? when I go visit my schools in october? or some other time?

Also what does it mean when a school sets no deadline for application materils? Should I still treat this as the earlier than feb. 1st Deadline or could i apply like today(don't worry i Won't)

No deadline for a school like Interlochen probably means they take qualified applicants who fit their needs as they apply. So it probably more of a first come, first serve within qualified applicants.

so i could apply today?

I would make sure you know a lot more about the school and your priorities before applying. Also see my other posting about targeting more generic (not arts specialty) schools.

thanks, I read it and added my comments there. IT'S REALLY HELPFUL!
