Hi! I got into NYU CAS Economics through ED I and will be part of the class of 2020. While I like Economics, I am interested in transferring to Stern for sophomore year as an internal transfer for the prestige/job opportunities and would like to know what classes I should take. I heard that the counselors try to discourage internal applicants, so they will be pretty useless to figure out what classes to take, but that 50+ internal applicants get admitted into Stern from CAS anyway.
(Apparently the above link are the requirements, but it’s not clear to me.)
I plan to take Math for Economics I and II in freshman year as well as the principles of macro and micro. However, I don’t think I will have space for the statistics requirements with all the core classes freshman are required to take. I was wondering if this was REQUIRED for sophomore applicants or just the courses equal to those in Stern. I plan to get a 3.7+ GPA to get into Stern, but am not sure what classes I should take.
If anyone WHO HAS INTERNALLY TRANSFERRED INTO STERN BEFORE (and I know there are many of them) can tell me exactly what classes they took first and second semester, that would be very helpful. Also, if you have any professor recommendations, I’d be very interested to hear them.
If you’re here to lecture me about how nobody gets into Stern by transferring internally, save it for some other time because I know it’s not true.
Hey, my friend goes to Stern right now. I was wondering the same thing a few months ago, so I asked her. Basically she said to choose courses that Stern kids would take. This is a good place to start: http://www.nyu.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/apply/internal-transfers/course-equivalencies-for-internal-transfers-to-stern-.html
And for the short answer part, look past “prestige” and “job prospectives.” Although it’s nowhere near impossible to make the transfer, several dozen, if not hundreds, attempt to make the transfer, so just maintaining high grades won’t cut it; you have to set yourself unique from the masses.
I also want to clarify that there’s nothing wrong with CAS Econ. NYU’s Econ department is among the best in the country. And if you’re concerned about careers, all Stern networking activities are open to ALL NYU students; all you need is someone who would be willing to give you the time and dates of the events, since it’s only distributed to Stern students. Firms KNOW how good the CAS Econ program is. You may have to work twice as hard, but there’s a reason why economics is so popular in NYU.
Hi! Thanks for your advice. That’s the same link on my post-- I already saw it, I’m just confused if I have to take ALL those classes or if they are just the course equivalencies in order to get credit once you already transfer to Stern.
And I really like CAS Econ and will be very happy there if I don’t get into Stern! I just know the networking is better at Stern, not THAT much better, but still, if I can get in, I would love to go there.
You only have to take one of the classes in each category, not all. Half of the Stern curriculum is liberal arts so it’s not as much work as you may think to keep up with Stern kids
Thank you! So if I take the normal CAS Econ curriculum for freshman year (which I would like to do in order to stay on track because there is a high chance of me not getting into Stern) of Math for Economics I and Principles of Macro for semester 1 and MFE II and Principles of Micro for semester 2, I will be able to apply for Stern?
@adreamer22 are you a CAS Econ undergrad at NYU? What do you think of the program, job opportunities, classes? Any professor/class recommendations? Thank you for being so helpful!
@Crystalline17 No, I was accepted to Stern EDI this year. I got all of this information from a friend who knew several people who transferred from CAS Econ to Stern. And you should be able to transfer with those classes.
CAS Econ is among the best in the country, with great job prospects (just not as good as Stern). You’ll be successful with great grades from either school. Even though there’s a general consensus that firms only pay attention to Stern students, any CAS student with comparable grades and good networking skills will have the same opportunities.
@adreamer22 Thanks for being so helpful! I hope I see you next year, and yep I am very happy with CAS Econ, just want to keep my options open.
@heman124 I saw previous threads that one year there were like 30 (or 60-70 in another thread) people who transferred internally, but I am not sure how many people in total applied. If the 60-70 is true, those are pretty good numbers.
