I have yet to receive my formal acceptance/rejection notification, but am still really curious about this IR 5-year program. How does it work exactly? How does one qualify? Are there any current Columbia students who are participating in this program? If I wanted to concentrate in Human Rights, would that be possible while also doing the 5-year program, and finally, how likely is it that I be chosen for this program and am able to complete it while also participating in a Varsity sport? Thanks in advance for any comments!!

I believe you apply in sophomore or junior year, and that it requires some sort of faculty support/nomination. There should be no interference with the ability to concentrate in Human Rights, which is a legitimate undergraduate major. Your fourth year will be a mix of SIPA and undergrad classes, and you could probably find requirement overlaps between SIPA and the Human Rights major. I don't think it would interfere with participation in varsity sports; by senior year your engagement with the sport may be limited anyway. The most problematic thing, if you're still participating by then, may be making required SIPA classes fit into your practice schedule.
