International Business Program/Honors College

Okay, I just typed a really long post and it didn't work, so here I go again!

I live in Camden, about 20 minutes from Columbia, maybe 35 from the school. I'm finishing my junior year as a foreign exchange student in Germany and will return in June and do my senior year starting this August. Both of my parents went to USC and football wise, I'm a gamecock at heart! I cringe at the name of Clemson just liked every born and raised Gamecock. I thank my Dad for this! :)

I also knew USC would be my safety school, but I never intended on actually going. I've been set on Georgetown. I've debated between International Relations (focus on Europe/German) and International Business (focus on Economics/German-speaking countries). Georgetown is known for its international programs. I visited it and fell in love with the university and the city! BUT, it's difficult to get in, and also costs a nice $45,000 a year.

However, I recently heard USC has the best international business program in the nation??? Is this referring to only the masters program, or to the undergraduate program as well? It is mind-boggling to think that the best international business program is only 35 minutes from my house. This has made it more appealing, obviously. I could potentially get a free ride and I'd be very close to home. I've been in Germany 9 months though so being in DC wouldn't be a problem at all! Still though, being in SC would be nice.

If I went to this school though, I want to make sure I even have a shot for getting into this major. Just how competitive is it? Also, the Honors College..do I have a shot? I've heard it's been getting more and more difficult to get in. My stats now are not so bad, but my senior year will be difficult. I've been in a German school for the last year and so it will be an adjustment. My English has gone down and I've learned the German way for things (believe it or not, Math here is very different!).
My UW GPA is 4.0. Weighted is 4.87, I believe. I'm currently ranked number 1 of 250 or so, but I think this could change. My SAT from my 10th grade year was a 1310 (1940 with writing maybe?). I want to bring this up, but once again I don't know how academically stupid I've become living in another language! Getting into the Honors College means a lot to me if I go to this school. I've worked really hard in school and want to continue to do so. I would hope this exchange would give me a little help, but I'm guessing the Honors College probably cares quite a bit about numbers.

Could anyone give me some insight into the Int'l Business UG major and the Honors College?

This became very drawn out, sorry! And please ignore my terrible English :)

Liebe Grüße!
Megan

Am I understanding that you will be back in SC for your senior HS year?
You'll have time to take another SAT but the Honors College/Scholarship app will need to be filed pretty early, perhaps before you have any fresh senior year grades.
My best solution for you would be to contact the Admissins Office directly. They are extremely helpful, and your case would be unique for them I think. There must be a way for them to evaluate your German grades and advise you properly.
I believe everyone starts ut as "pre" International Business, and then you apply for entry. I dont think there are any direct freshman admits, but I may be wrong. Another thing to check out with Admissions. There are lots of Honors/Int'l Business kids. Your German will be a big plus in consideration for the major.
Don't forget, even though USC is so close to home, once you are there you can do more study abroads.Theres even stipend $$ available through the Honrs College to do it.
Good luck on your college search!!

Yes, I will be back. The part about applying early is part of what's bothering me with the SAT..I've heard for the Honors College is over 1400!! I will try to raise it, but I'm trying to prepare for what could happen if I don't.

Unfortunately, my German grades are awful! I am graded just like the other students..and German schools are tough. There are three levels of schools, and I am in the most difficult (I like to think about it as Honors, where as the two lower schools are College Prep and Tech Prep). Most of the other students) honors level students, mind you) are content with over 50% accuracy. If I translated them to the American scale my GPA would suffer, as I normally fall into the D or F category. I came here with about 10 words of German and understood nothing, so obviously the first half of the year my tests were horrible :P

I will ask those questions to the admissions office, thanks for your help!
And that's great to know about the stipend!

Thanks!

More replies are welcome of course :)

think of theHonors admissions essays you can write about the fact that you went there with 10 words of German, and being immersed in that culture/schooling!!

scarolina89 - The statistics that I heard at a visit to USC were: There are 100 freshmen business majors. There are 700 business majors at the beginning of the junior year. Last year 60 were accepted out of 120 applicants to the Intl Bus prog.
