Taking SAT Math 2 and Mandarin in October and November

Income: I'm sure I need aid, but my parents insist I dont...

Applying for aid for Penn since they are need blind to canadians
I want to apply for aid to NYU, but apparently that reduced my chances to like 0% haha (somebody clarify please?)
Not Applying for aid to Columbia, ND, UC Berkeley, Georgetown

ECs:
Duke of Ed Gold and Silver award
At least 500 service hours thanks to those awards and CAS (for IB)
Church teacher for 4 years (have been in church for 5 years)
Started math club (2 years - school made it so that you can only start clubs in grade 11)
Very active - I do a lot of outdoorsy stuff ever since I moved to canada (rockclimbing, caving, hiking, canoeing)
Hike my first major trail when I was 14 (It was 25ish km and I had no experience whatsoever about these things lol)
I run alot?
Tutored math to some kids in the summer for a lower fee
Piano since I was 3
I am learning/ brushing up on my Chinese with my tutor
Spent summers of grade 9-10 travelling/staying in the middle east and China (first time for both places)

Very interested in business, although I have no experience in it - I never found opportunities to explore 'businessy' stuff. My parents are both entrepreneurs and business owners though. Does not having anything to do with business ruin my chances for Wharton ED?

As you probably noticed, I'm only applying to what my mom and I discussed are the top schools. If I can't get into any of them, I'll save my money and go to Canadian universities insead :D ($50k for FOUR years??? why not)

As you know, you’ve picked top schools. They’re reaches for most people. That said, you do have a decent chance. Wharton, Columbia, and UCB will be the harder ones, IMO.

By the way, assuming you’re Chinese and have a Chinese last name, I would strongly advise you against taking SAT Chinese.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1690007-claremont-mckenna-duke-bucknell-grinnell-uofr-chances.html</a></p>

Is NYU need aware for internationals? It isn’t for US students. They just don’t guarantee to meet full need and usually don’t.

@cptofthehouse‌ NYU is probably need aware for internationals. I heard that they are really stingy with aid. With that being said, will it affect my chances if I applied for aid.

@Woandering‌ thank you for the reply! I was planning to take SAT Lit, but when I took it the first time, I bombed miserably and therefore resorted to chinese D: Chinese is technically my second language though. I would chance you, but I have no idea what your schools are… sorry D:

anyone else?

Haha like you, I’m really interested in business but have no experience in it xD Well, I’ve briefly dabbled in accounting and such but I’d rather go into entrepreneurship :stuck_out_tongue: Many people have said that applicants do not need business experience to get in, though, so don’t worry. I think they’re more looking for the business “drive” and mindset.
I only know UPenn, so I’ll just comment on that. As an international applicant, it will be harder for you to get in. However, your numbers seem to be good, and your extracurriculars sound interesting. I would definitely highlight all the outdoorsy stuff  All in all, good luck!

Unrelated, but lot of my friends want to apply to a Canadian school xD I’m jealous that you guys get it so cheap!

Will you comment on mine, please?

@aimhigh333 Colleges won’t really care which language you learned first. If you’re obviously Chinese, there will already be a slight bias toward math and science skills. An extra language, given you’re studying in an English speaking environment, with presumably (from their perspective) Chinese speaking home, won’t help you at all.

I’m in the same situation in that regard. I’m also wary of SAT Physics, although I want to take that, because there’s always that slight bias against Asians.

@Pyrefox‌ thanks!! haha I know right… my friends all think I’m crazy for wanting to go to the states. They just cannot fathom the costs. I really hope they can see my drive!

@Woandering‌ then do you have any suggestions as to what other SAT 2s I can take? Literature and BIO was in my considerations, but since I did not take AP bio, I have not learnt half of the stuff yet, and it seems impossible trying to cram it all in 1 month!

@Woandering oh, there’s a bias? oops, I’m taking Physics next week xD MIT requires a science subject test though, and I’m in Physics C right now so it’s probably the best choice for me. Fingers crossed >.>

@aimhigher333 Unless you have studied one of the histories really well, I suppose you’re left with one of the sciences. In any case, don’t let my comment completely put you off SAT Chinese. If you’re absolutely sure you can’t do something else, then do Chinese.

@Pyrefox Slight bias. You should definitely take Physics for MIT, though. Generally, one of the histories for an Asian would be more impressive. Unless you take all the languages.

@Woandering Whelp, I’m bad at history and languages, so I guess Physics will stay. I hear its hard though

bump? woah these threads seem to move very quickly!

NYU is need aware for INT AND gives aid to FIRST YEAR international. That means you get nothing after freshmen year. (which is why I didn’t bother applying)

As @Woandering‌ said, it’s really not recommended to take SAT language test that is actually your home language. In common sense, wouldn’t admission officers frown at your application if you are a Chinese and took SAT Chinese test?
They will think you are trying to have it easy.

Upenn is a need aware school, so much you need, less likely you will get in. Wharton is even more competitive. Why don’t you look at some liberal arts college? Or schools like Babson College?

Good Luck for you, and I hope you really don’t take SAT Chinese…

Make sure to have some safeties.

@paul2752‌ thanks for the reply! What do you mean NYU only gives aid first year?? I thought that you get aid every year? Thats what the adcom said?

Wharton is need-blind for Canadians and US P.Rs/ citizens, so I’m sure there won’t be a problem? Can someone clarify this?

If I don’t take the chinese SAT, what else can I do D: I have 0 knowledge in physics and history

That’s what the website says. Oh I forgot that you are a Canadian, sorry. SAT physics shouldn’t be a big problem. Or you can take different language test.

Website:
Financial aid to international students on our New York campus is only available for incoming freshmen. If offered admission, international students will be required to submit a certification of finances demonstrating that they will be able to fund their four years of study through a combination of their own funds and any financial assistance we may provide. Students should not submit a certification of finances or bank statements until after they are offered admission

Oh I see… wow I thought we could get aid for all 4 years… NYU is freaking expensive </3

anyone else??

oops I forgot to add that I am applying to NYU stern, Georgetown McDonough school of Business, mendoza business school (ND) and columbia college

also, my top 3 choices are Upenn, NYU, and Georgetown. chances for those maybe? :)

Again, NYU won’t give you aid after first year. No doubt you will get in but FA is a problem. For NYU stern, Idk…

UPenn meets 100% need but extremely competitive since it’s need aware. It’s a reach(for everyone. It’s an IVY!) I think you should apply but make sure to apply for safeties.
Georgetown is need blind but offers limited amount of scholarship. (Match?)

Remember that Upenn practices Early Decision-that means you can’t apply another ED, but you can apply to non-binding EA unless other schools have restrictive EA-Gtown University has restrictive EA, which allows you to apply to other non binding EAs but not ED. Also, if you get rejected in ED, you cannot apply to RD again.

UPenn - High Reach
NYU Stern - Reach
Columbia - High Reach
ND - High Target
UC Berkley - Target
Georgetown - Low reach
Your math on the ACT is a little low for a business school and unfortunately it’s a little harder for Asians to get into top schools now a days (at least that’s what I have heard). EC’s are alright. Terrific ranking and strength schedule. Go for the math 2 and maybe for a humanities instead of Mandarin just because, like he said, you are Chinese haha. Good luck! Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1692015-chance-me-ill-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>
