International Health major @ georgetown...prospects, marketability, etc.

Hi everyone,

I have a question about the International Health major at georgetown. How marketable is it? How will it look when I apply to med. school with that degree? Should I take the more traditional..bio, chem, organic chem, etc. majors in undergrad...or will it play to my strengths if i take IH @ Georgetown? What kind of jobs can I get with such a major?

Thanks

I second the question about jobs..
I am applying to georgetown for the same major.
does anyone know of other schools with similar programs?
sry...i don't mean to steal your thread

Hi NATAS,

Remember you can ask for college chances at the "What's My Chances?" Thread ... I"ll return the favor for you.

I've heard about that program at Georgetown, but Georgetown is more renowned for its law program. The health programs at Georgetown don't carry as much prestige, if any at all. I recommend that you do take the more traditional majors in undergrad so that you can ensure that medicine is the thing for you --- you may end up finding something else that you like -- or you can apply for a medical program at other schools; for example, Rice U offers a program that allows you to experience medicine as an undergrad, then you get a guaranteed admission into the Baylor School of Medicine, one of the most respected med schools in the nation ... that program is known as the Rice-Baylor Scholars (something like that) ... that way you can even bypass the MCAT. Check the school website for more info. I believe that WUSTL also offers something similar.

Going for a medicine-related major isn't necessary for med school, though you could do it. I've heard of people taking English majors in undergrad and ending up going to med school. (Just as a side note)

Good luck, and thanks for chancing me!
