thoughts on majoring in international medicinem

hi everyone, looking for some insight on the bachelors of science in international medicine program that is offered at georgetown. as someone who dreams to work with doctors without borders as a physician in the future, this program looked very appealing to me. i was just wondering if someone could give me some thoughts on how easy/difficult it would be to include premed course work in this major and how medical schools might look upon this major. also, would it be possible to complete this major while playing a varsity sport? i noticed that there is a study abroad requirement in the fall, obviously not possible for varsity athlete. could this be moved to the summer as a subsitute?

if you do not reccomened this major for pre med students/ med school hopefuls, could you give me some thoughts on what major you reccomend?

thanks everyone!

Hi, I’m a rising sophomore at Georgetown in the SFS majoring in STIA and premed. I have a lot of friends who are in the NHS and from what I’ve heard it is pretty challenging to fit in an ihealth major and be premed. In fact, I know several people personally who came in at the beginning of freshman year wanting to be ihealth/premed and now one of them switched to human science and is still premed but the other one dropped premed and is sticking with ihealth. And that’s typically what happens, although there are exceptions to the rule. There are some people who manage to complete both, but that required taking lots of summer classes and taking a lot of classes during the school year, which on top of premed classes was kinda bad.

As far as your athlete question goes, I think the deans in the NHS are really flexible and accommodating for the most part and I’m sure you would be able to work something out with them.

So bottom line is that yes you can do ihealth/premed, but it’ll be rough. If you have any other questions, maybe about STIA for example, PM me.

hope this helped.

thanks motivated! yeah that was really helpful. im nervous to take on too much of a load with the athletic commitment. my mom advised me that even if i want to practice medicine internationally one day, its more important to focus on the science and become a good doctor and i can always learn the policy stuff later on.
