International Interview Prescreening Rumor - True or False?

Is it true that only select international applicants get an interview?

I believe an alum international admissions coordinator reported it to be true here on CC, so yes, I think so.

^ Is that for Canada too?

^ the posts I have seen referenced the practice in the context of Asian countries, where admit rates are exceedingly low. Canada may or may not be like that, but I would bet that they try to interview everyone there, seeing as it’s not nearly as deprived of Harvard grads as, say, China.

Because, most Chinese wouldn’t come all the way to Harvard and then go back after graduation… What a shame.

Oh, okay. Thanks!

This is not true, to the best of my knowledge. Harvard tries to make sure all of its applicants get an interview. While it may be logistically impossible in some far-flung places, in others attempts are made.

Canadian applicants definitely all get interviews, unless they’re from Alert or something.

I was offered an interview, but since I’m currently out of the U.S. I couldn’t participate. Anyway, my interviewer told me to contact the international interview office, and this is the response I got: “In most cases, we only arrange interviews when we require more information than the applicant has included in his or her application materials.”

This is somewhat true in countries with limited interview resources. In these countries, interviews are only conducted if the Admission Office request for them to be conducted. This usually happens if they want an added perspective on the applicant, more information, to verify some things they have read in the application etc. More often than not in such countries, all the admits would have had an interview.

[Harvard College Admissions § Applying: International Interviews](http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/international/interviews.html)

" If the country you are applying from is listed in the following group, you are in an area where we have a limited number of interviewers compared to the number of requests/applications we receive. So, applicants in those countries will only be contacted after their application materials have been received and processed by the Admissions Office"…

This is the diplomatic way to tell that if you come from these countries, you are gonna get interview only if you are good enough… (prescreen scenario)

wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll… I guess I got rejected??? as seeing Im from one of “those countries” and didn’t get an interview… but you never know :)

@sooohard - I’m also from one of “those countries” and I didn’t get an interview either.

Did anyone coming from one of “those countries” get an interview yet?

There’s also the possibility that they really just couldn’t find a single alum to interview in the area. Entirely possible. As ubiquitous as H alum are, it’s still a finite number. And frankly, if you’re trying to solve the issue of rural waste management in say Cambodia, I’d say that comes before ‘interviewing potential students’ on your to-do list.

I’m also from one of ‘those countries’ and I didn’t get an interview, and neither did my friend who also applied EA… anyone from one of those areas got an interview?

I’m getting an interview tomorrow, though I’m in one of ‘those countries’. The alum contacted me last week.

@tridpq - I do not mean to pry, but where are you from?

I’m from Vietnam, but studying in Singapore. My interview is in Singapore as well.

Then you are probably not in the same boat as those who actually live in a place where there are few or no alumni at all.

@tridpq Hey I study in Singapore as well! I didn’t receive any interview… Guess I am disqualified already… All the best for yours! Tell us how it goes ok?

well, tridpq is from a place and lives in a place where it is “those countries.” Can I just ask when you submitted your application? I’m sorry to be so nosy, but you know its like almost 3 weeks left and like I’m so nervous. The rumor about international interviews really got to me. :(
