Should I put it on my application if I’ve been a gold medallist and semi finalist in the iOEL (international olympiad of english language) for three years running? It’s kind of embarrassing- I don’t think a lot of people have even heard about this olympiad so it might look bad or desperate. I thought it might recommend my english skills since I’m Indian and I’m unsure about taking the TOEFL as the test fee is so high.
Yes, put it. Why not? Put anything you’ve accomplished. That shows not only your English, but also that you’re willing to undertake something extra and can succed at it. That you can study independently. Or if with a teacher, that’s still a lot of preparation, work. That is a plus.
Honestly? I wouldn’t. I’m very involved in olympiads and had never heard of it, so I took a look at past papers, and frankly, its questions are easier than SAT questions… I don’t think it’s worth mentioning, but if you do think it’s worth it, certainly put it on your application! As for your TOEFL issue, you won’t be exempt from taking the TOEFL (@ the colleges who require you to take the TOEFL of course). Maybe you could check if you qualify for a fee waiver (I just know they exist, and not a lot more about them, so I couldn’t tell you about them, sorry). Good luck with your application!
