International Relations at University of Chicago?

How's the international relations department at the University of Chicago? Also, I wanted to know about the Arabic program at UChicago if there is one...does it go up to advanced? Also, how are interns for international relations majors in Chicago?

Thanks.

Whoa, yeah, I have similar questions. ^_^

I'm a rising Sr. who is also interested in IR and very, very, very interested in University of Chicago. I know two things about the department:

1) Its called International Studies at UChicago not International Relations

2) It was ranked as the number 7 (I think 7, it was defiantly in the top ten though) Undergrad IR program in the States by Foreign Policy Magazine. Their methodology was 100% peer assessment, so obviously its got a great reputation.

Wow, that sounds fantastic!

I hope I can get in...

International Studies is a strong program. Like other schools (besides Tufts, Georgetown), it's less of its own program and more interdisciplinary. It's a great concentration for those who want to learn a little bit of everything, and it uses some of Chicago's strongest departments (econ, poly sci) as a basis.

UChicago's IR approach is definitely interdisciplinary. The average student will be taking courses from all over the social science division, even the Harris School or Law School. Also, the joint masters in IR or masters in social sciences with a history, political science or area studies AB is also quite viable for the strong student.

so...then, what about internships in chicago for IR students? as well, any word on the arabic program?

Internships are decent for a big city in general (I would say second only to NYC), but obviously there is a huge leg up if you are in DC for IR. However, you can certainly go there in the summer, and many public spirited undergraduates do after their second and third years. DC standards for internships are low since they are mostly upaid, so landing one from UChicago is not hard at all if you make the deadlines.

As for arabic, Chicago from what I hear is about as good as it gets save Georgetown. Coursework goes through the fourth year, as covers both classical and MSA. See the courses under the 'ARAB' indent here...

Well according to an article that I pass by daily en route to my job (I work in Pick Hall - the HQ of the Poli Sci and IR departments) U Chicago has been ranked 7th for its undergrad IR program by Foreign Policy magazine. I'm entering my 4th year in the poli sci department so I can't really comment too much on IR, but I guess that's good!
