What do you think would be the best undergraduate college to become a member of the US foreign policy community (diplomat, analyst, etc)? Im transferring to UCLA as political science major and will be specializing in international relations, and Im wondering how much the school will help me (compared to, say, Georgetown) in terms of connections, quality of education in the subject, etc.

I would also like to know.

It’s a bit of a moot point for you, since you’re already coming here, isn’t it?

However, I will say that I am considering the same career as you. I can’t assess our academic rankings, you might check that. However, geographically, you are at a disadvantage, since the schools that have the strongest ties to the foreign policy world like Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, U Maryland, are all in the greater DC area.

I’ve made some personal connections here, but you have to try harder and look in the right places. UCLA also has some good DC centered programs–definitely check out CAPP, where you intern a quarter in DC for credit, it’s really popular here. I know at least one former UCLA student who now is in the senior ranks at Foggy Bottom, and I’ve been to CIA, DIA, and State recruiting sessions here. It all depends on what you put into it, and UCLA definitely has the resources to help you, though, I know it’s helped me (and I’m not even a PS major!)
