International Relations Internships

I am a current undergraduate student and I am interested in figuring out both what IR internships and where to find them. Personally, I don't have any geographical limitations although internships in Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East would be preferable.

I have done some basic research on internships with big IOs like WHO and UNESCO, but they seem extremely competitive. What other internships might there be in the field of international relations at maybe an NGO or an organization like Al Jazeera or another news organization?

Intl Relations have a lot less college internships than other majors, since most firms would just hire professionals. Still, you can always look for options. Its best to start with what your topical/area interests are:

US Department of State
Foreign Consulates, Embassies, Cultural Centers (Consulate of Japan, Swedish Cultural Center)
Foreign Trade Commissions, Export Trade Groups
Multinational Corporations (Boeing, Glaxosmithkline, GE, IBM)
NGOs – Development, Human Rights, Legal, etc. (CARE Intl, Medicins Sans Frontieres, Red Cross, Amnesty Intl)
IGOs – United Nations, OAS, NATO, AU
Global Organizations (United Nations Association, World Affairs Councils, Thinktanks)
International Media (Al Jazeera, France 24, Deutsche Welle)
Education (JET Program for Japan, EPiK for Korea)

Its difficult to get a position, especially on abroad unless you have a degree, prior work/intern experience in the field or strong connections. Always apply for as many positions-- competitive internships typically draw fewer applicants.
