International Relations??

Hi All~

As I weigh my options, I'm considering Michigan, along with a few other schools. One of the things I've noticed though, is that Michigan does not offer IR as a major. This is okay, as I'm not sure I'd major in it anyway, but I'm considering it.

So my question is, does Michigan have a similar major? Also, if one was considering applying for the Ford school of Public Policy, and eventually law school, what would be some good things to major in?

Thanks, and sorry if this is kinda broad, just tryin to get some ideas....thanks!

VC, Michigan has a top ranked Political Science Department and a top ranked Economics department. Those are probably the two most common majors for people interested in Public Affairs or Law.

sweet, thanks alexandre!

Umich seems to be top in so many sectors.. if it aint all rounded, then i dunno what is..

Chanpycrhis, Michigan is very well rounded. Here are some of the latest rankings in the Social Sciences and Humanties. Keep in mind those are graduate rankings, but unless a university has a serious lack of resources and/or talent, there is virtually no difference between undergraduate and graduate programs. All students share the same faculty, facilities and research opportunities:

Michigan also has very strong professional programs. Its college of Engineering is always ranked among the top 10 nationally, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Michigan's Ross business school is ranked among the top 3 or 4 undergraduate Business programs in the country. Michigan also has a very highly regarded Law school.

As their assessment scores suggest, there is virtually no difference in prestige and professional placement between those 14 Law programs. In fact, they are referred to as the N (national) 14. Michigan places between 100 and 150 students into those N14 Law schools on an annual basis. Last year, Michigan placed 110 students into those elite Law Schools:

University of Michigan Law School: 91 admitted, 46 enrolled
Harvard University Law School: 17 admitted, 14 enrolled
Georgetown University Law School: 39 admitted, 13 enrolled
Northwestern University Law School: 23 admitted, 7 enrolled
Columbia University Law School: 22 admitted, 6 enrolled
New York University Law School: 25 admitted, 5 enrolled
University of California-Berkeley (Boalt Hall): 12 admitted, 4 enrolled
University of Virginia: 25 admitted, 4 enrolled
Cornell University: 33 admitted, 3 enrolled
University of Chicago: 16 admitted, 3 enrolled
University of Pennsylvania: 13 admitted, 2 enrolled
Yale University: 3 admitted, 2 enrolled
Stanford University: 6 admitted, 1 enrolled
Duke University: 28 admitted, none (0) enrolled

Michigan also places a lot of its students into Law schools ranked between #15 and #25:

Fordham University Law School: 41 admitted, 11 enrolled
George Washington University Law School: 55 admitted, 11 enrolled
Boston University Law School: 52 admitted, 9 enrolled
Emory University Law School: 27 admitted, 7 enrolled
University of California-Los Angeles Law School: 19 admitted, 5 enrolled
University of Iowa Law School: 17 admitted, 5 enrolled
University of Minnesota Law School: 10 admitted, 4 enrolled
University of Notre Dame Law School: 20 admitted, 4 enrolled
University of Texas-Austin Law School: 20 admitted, 4 enrolled
Washington University-St Louis: 16 admitted, 4 enrolled

University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign Law School: 30 admitted, 3 enrolled
Vanderbilt University Law School: 10 admitted, 2 enrolled
University of Southern California Law School: 24 admitted, 1 enrolled
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Law School: 6 admitted, none (0) enrolled
University of Washington Law School: 7 admitted, none (0) enrolled

Only a handful of universities enjoy such placement success.

Of course, Michigan also has a top ranked Medical School (between #7 and #11) and a top ranked Hospital (also ranked between #7 and #12 among all US Hospitals).

Michigan also has top ranked programs in Architecture, Art, Dentistry, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Affairs, Public Health and Social Work.

And Michigan's resources are impressive. From its $7.2 billion endowment (tied with Columbia as the sixth wealthiest university in the US) to its 8 million-title library (7th largest university library in the World) to its $800 million research spending (2nd or 3rd highest in the nation), Michigan just seems to pop out everywhere!

Finally, Michigan's campus is very lively and always engaged in intellectual, cultural, artistic and athletic events of the highest calibre. Plus Ann Arbor is quite possibly the quaintest and hippest college town there is.

In short, Michigan has very few weaknesses.
