International Relations

I am looking forward to study IR and major on it. But, there are few things I would like to ask you people about this subject.

1) Will I get job opportunities in international firms, i.e. UN, if I major in it?

2) Is it a very tough subject?

3) [MOST IMPORTANT] Which colleges should I look for? I am looking for colleges that provide substantial scholarships for a mediocre student like me.

IR is relevant to the majority of government jobs (i.e. UN, Senate, foreign service) You can definitely find jobs as an international relations major. But such government jobs are often difficult to get (you must have high grades, great recommendations, have lots of work/leadership experiences, be fluent in a 2nd or 3rd language, have connections etc) It is such a broad field

I don't really know if it is a "very tough" subject, but I would say no. Engineering and other scientific/technical fields have a greater workload. But it is very writing/reading intensive, so it can be very tough in that aspect.

Colleges...what do you mean by mediocre student? The schools that are a bit less selective that come to mind, great for IR include American and George Washington.

Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, George Washington U., American U., Swarthmore, Claremont McKenna, etc....

I heard from my JHU IR major roommate, its a lot of reading, and a lot of writing. There are intimate indepth class discussions but its more about understanding principles and concepts than just memorization such as in chemistry or biology.

There are a tremendous amount of different opportunities open to students who major in IR. For example, I have a relative who majored in IR from Colby college and she is doing finance stuff at Fidelity. Alternatively, your experience and relative coursework in IR and BA/BS degree in int'l affairs could prove to be a asset to those who employ ppl with those type of experience... (ie. UN, NATO, Foreign Legions, etc..)

A big thanks to both of you. Almost all my queries are solved. The only thing that I want is colleges that has IR majors and provide substantial scholarship for international students. Anyone?

Not in the US, but how about St. Andrews in Scotland?

That college doesn't provides any financial aid, as far as I know.

I can second St. Andrews, UK. Just this week they opened a new terrorism building: News and Events | University of St Andrews

Constant investment paired with a globally renowned course.
