@shiomi: US Students probably have test prep classes in school. Even if that isn't so, us students are much more exposed to it, since people/teachers talk about it for US students since like grade 9. Canadian students don't get prep courses or anything like that, except those companies that charge $1000+ for a couple of months. Believe me, the Blue Book can't help me as much as a real teacher can.

and I really hope the math thing is true. I really need to kill the SAT Math II. I have a feeling 670 in Math won't get me into Wharton.

^ i hope u have the ability to do so too. no harm feelings, but 670 in reasoning math, mmm i havn't seen anyone with that big jump yet. maybe u had a bad day that time/? careless??
i hope u get 800 too :P

^ya i don't know what happened in math. I have like 97-98% in my honors math class. Maybe cuz my math sections came later, where I didn't have all my energy. My first 3 sections (not including essay) were CR/W. If I study hard, I think I can make a high 700s for math II.

well it turns out that i got 790 on SAT MathII. I'm still thinking I need to retake SATI in January.

Wow. People did so well! Congratulations all of you :)

I got:
CR: 800 (YAAAY! Seriously. Im so fricking happy.)
W: 610, essay 8 (i hated my essay, so im not surprised about the score)
M: 530 (at least it's above average. Strange thing is, I'm really good at math. I take the hardest math classes available in my school, and have all As in them. I guess I'm just not good at SAT math. :P)

I wish I had time to take it once more, but since this was my first time, and I only had a few weeks to prepare (basically,I took one practice test,) I could have done a lot worse.

^ same with me. I am doing good at advanced mathematics such as Calculus and Vector Algebra but I suck at SAT math.
Your Critical Reading score is awesome for an international though.

Oh really? You think everyone takes prep classes? That's a retarded assumption. Prep classes are expensive and unnecessary unless you really need them. So apparently Canadians don't learn basic math and grammar. They also apparently don't know how to read either.

Oh and yeah, the blue book is all you need for the SAT. Enough said.

saaammie! how do you get cr 800?? omigosh. was it second nature for you to pick out the right answer? omigosh. any strategies?
lol SAT Maths pretty okay dude. just redo every question thrice in different methods if youve got the time. main thing is try not to be careless. do you already know the concepts behind every question? you seem to have a strong math foundation. then it should be alright especially when you notice how math question types keep repeating.

@shiomi: whoa...you don't need to be so offended and offensive. I didn't say that everybody takes prep classes, but some do. My main point is that US students are more exposed to it. For US universities, almost every school needs the SAT, while Canadian universities do not. In fact, my high school counselors don't know anything about it. I am just wondering if schools look at international scores slightly different than for US students. So don't get all uptight, I'm just saying.

drange17, haha, honestly, I don't know how I scored that well onthe CR. But i've always been a really good speed-reader,so i guess that would be my best piece of advice. Work on your speed reading. It at least gives me time to know what the text is about then having time to go back and look at specific parts of the text to answer the questions.

I think that's my problem with the math, that I'm careless. I WISH i had time to retake it.

Is it true that intl SAT scores are scaled on a different curve to SAT scores done by US citizens? If this is true, what's the difference and why are we scaled differently - what is the (dis) advantage for intl. students?!

@Aininor

Int students are scaled on a same curve. But, there are too many internationals. I have never taken any english lessons. There are canadians, mexicans... who is barely different than natives. And, internationals like me, is not able to score well on CR,etc... If you can introduce yourself well, there will be no problem. For example, i did bad on both CR,WR sections. But, I explained my excuses then, they(colleges) want me to get a toefl. If you reach the barrier which is almost around 80points on IBT, your scores can easily be covered. But, in reality, you have to show something very attractive of you. They are wondering how talented you are. Try to superscore on MATI, MATII or what kind of section related is to your major. Show yourself...dont worry...this is how it works for ints except canadians or whatever...

Well ,I live in Eastern Europe and my native language is not English. My native alphabet is cyrilics but this doesnt stop me to score about 2260 - 2300 on my practice tests :} English grammar is the easiest thing. You have no idea what it takes to study the German grammar.Imagine that every single noun has different plural form (er , en , on ,an , eu ) ... Before the nouns in English we put 'a' ,'an' or 'the' .In German the definite article doesn`t depend on the sentence ,it depends on the word.WHen you memorize a word, you memorize it with its definite article (der ,das or die)
All i want to say is that the English grammar is really easy and shame on native speakers who complain about it.

ıvan_stanchev

how long did it take to develop your scores? and how much did u accomplished ? from beginning till end? for wr and cr sections

also, ich bin für dein gefühl. it was painstaking and i was really suffering because of articles =D

Well i am studying English and Deutch in a specialized language highschool. At grade 8 we had only 5 classes - sports, musics, math ,Deutch and English ( 21 classes per week) .The sports and musics classes were just for relaxing .
Since 8th grade i ve been doing reading comprehension and sentence completion exercises. And i am very good at them.I have learnt only the grammatically correct (formal) language and the writing sections are not a problem (hardly make 1 or 2 mistakes).
TO prepare for the SAT i just enriched my vocabulary list by reviewing the Barron`s 3500 list during my summer holiday.
As i know the grammar and the vocabulary ,i just needed some practice tests to get used to allocated time.

ivan is somewhat a regular on the SAT forums. and my dear fellow internationals, being international is no excuse for bad SAT scores. and blaming it on lack of availability of books/courses/tutoring/whatever is worse.

i'm an international and i had a 2350 in my first time taking the SAT. and i did it without any sort of tutoring either, largely with the widely available college board material. so for those of you wondering if your scores will be 'forgiven', my question to you is, if it comes down to only the SAT, why would they pick you instead of another international who scored higher than you? (and i promise you, such internationals do exist in large numbers)

and as for those of you who think an 800 in math 2 says a lot, here's a hint: 10% of all math 2 takers get 800 and many of those kids are internationals. so once again, you don't gain any sort of competitive edge from standardized testing.

Well,if your native language is not English ,sometimes it happens when solving SAT math problems not to understand some math terms or just not to understand what you are actually asked .However ,if you have practised enough, this shouldn
t be a problem. But being an international and not having at least ,i repeat,at least 740 on Writing and at least 700 on Writing cannot be excused.
In Bulgaria the only available SAT prep books is ''Barron
s how to prep'' .I ordered 6 other books from Amazon.com

srrinath where are you from :}

singapore.
