Hi, I would just like to know what are my chances of getting into Emory, Virginia, Berkeley and NYU (Stern).

And if I were to apply to Cornell or Upenn, what should be the SAT scores that I should then get?

For Berkeley, what do they judge you on, since they no longer require teacher's recommendations nor predicted prelims results? (I acquired this information from the students who just got admitted into Berkeley's 2010 class.)

CR 740
Math 680
Writing 650

SAT II
Bio 780 Math II 680

I'm from a top Singapore junior college, grades are pretty average by school percentile standards, I usually fall in around 60 percentile.

Extra-curriculum (CCA)
4 years of choir - attained gold with honours in Singapore Youth Fest, performed in Esplanade for school's 90th anniversary, staged concerts
National Youth Achievement Award - Bronze
1.5 years Interact Club in HC - weekly tutoring given to underprivileged children
2 week overseas community involvement trip to Bangalore
1 week overseas community involvement trip to Thailand
2 years World Vision Singapore Youth Ambassador Programme - promoting World Vision activities to the public, to schools, fundraising work, recruition of new batch of youth ambassadors etc.
2x volunteer in 30 hours famine camp org by World Vision
Team Leader in fundraising flea market project for charity
Outside school - attained grade 8 in piano practical and theory

I've always had a pretty heavy involvement in community work (CIP) and has accumulated around 500 hours from both secondary school and JC.

*** Oh and is it true that most US universities have higher expectations of international students so much so that your SAT scores have to be higher than their average scores/75th percentile listed on their websites?

Hi there i also apply to NYU, im from CJ.
Personally, i think ur maths SAT II and SAT I are a bit low
By the way, u apply to Stern or CAS? because if its stern then u definitely have to brush up ur maths
good luck!

dude, i had the same sat1 scores and higher subj test scores, and i was rejected by cornell and berkeley. but that coulda been cuz i applied for fin aid. DO u need fin aid??
for cornell, without fin aid , a2150 should be fine.
but u need more than good sat scores for the above colleges, good ecs are reqd too.
ur ECs look pretty decent to me.

Yup I’m going to retake my SATs in Dec and then retake math II in Oct.
Idk why I find math for SAT1 quite easy but I just didn’t manage to score so well…maybe I made a lot of careless mistakes :/

Oh btw the one from CJ (sorry I don’t know your name) - what’s CAS? I’m looking at Stern because I would like to study undergrad business. Do you happen to know what’s the minimum score/score range I should score for Math II and Math SAT1 for Stern?

Nope I’m not going to check my fin aid box…because I know that it will greatly lower my chances.

Thank you everyone for your replies (:

How can I improve my chances of getting into Berkeley?

CAS=College of Arts and Science
Stern Maths I and Maths II should be 760+
Berkeley is very numbers oriented so… good SAT scores and school grades :)

Since Berkeley admissions closes end Nov, I don’t have time to retake my SAT1 so I’m just going to submit it as it is. Do they look at your school grades more than your SAT scores or vice versa?

But I have heard from my seniors that Chem SAT2 is easier to score at, so should I take Chem instead of retaking Math SAT2 to get a much higher score? Or will it affect my chances slightly to apply for business schools since they focus on math more? But then again it should be just any 2 subject tests right…

if for biz school, then definitely math II. Its never stated but its understood. I got a 740 on chem and 800 on Math II so i think for HC ppl should not be a problem.
But keep in mind, Bekerley is very number oriented for internationals.

Do you know whether universities generally have higher expectations of international students and expect them to get above the average SAT score for their school?

Everything u do surpassing your “average” peers is called competitive advantage.
And yes, it does accumulate and when the competitive advantage > “required admission stats”, you get in.
So yeah, i say a good SAT cannot hurt, it only makes u more competitive advantage
