Hi everyone :)
I am an international student living in Asia right now ( Although i have Permanent residency in California don't know if that will help?)
Over here education is conducted under the british education system where o levels are done from the age of 15-16 and GCE a levels are done from 16-18
In my case i have done O levels where i achieved 5 A STARS, 4AS AND 3BS
i am now in the International baccalaureate diploma programme which is only available in 2 schools here
Please rate my chances from 1 being a very low chance to 5 being the highest chance for UC's such as UCB UCLA UCI UCSD and maybe stanford yale and dartmouth?
Sat score of 2250 on first try ( hoping to retake and get a perfect)
Predicted IBDP score of
7 FOR HL ECONOMICS( and another predicted A for GCE A level economics on the side)
6 FOR HL BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT
6 FOR HL BIOLOGY
6 FOR SL MATH ( and a predicted A for GCE A LEVEL MATHEMATICS on the side)
6 FOR SL ENGLISH
6 FOR SL SPANISH AB INITIO
Please bear in mind that IBDP and GCE a levels are very rigorous courses which american unis encourage doing am i right?

We do not have a GPA here and so my counsellor advised me against giving one for the applications. Your suggestions advice and ''chances'' will be most appreciated :)

How do you have permanent residency in California? Shouldn’t it just be the US? I don’t know much about that… Anyway it won’t help unless your parents live in CA, in which you might be eligible for in-state tuition.

I don’t understand… Are those good scores? What are the grades you can get? I’m not sure your scores on that will be relevant, and is GCE exam based, and if so, why didn’t you post your results?

Yes, they encourage either AP or IB courses.

Retrying is unnecessary, even if you think you can score better.

Doing what?

I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure all colleges require some sort of GPA or grades. Someone please confirm/correct me.

Advice: leave off ECs you only did for one or two years. They don’t show dedication.

Regardless, you have a good shot at UCI/UCSD. UCLA/Berkeley it’s hard to say, because the trend is towards more OOSers due to their extra tuition. So I’d say you have a decent shot, but those schools are both crapshoots.

You can apply at Stanford, Yale and Dartmouth if you want, but your ECs don’t seem to be on-par with what they’re looking for.

I don’t believe in assigning numbers to admission chances.

Sorry im new to this forum and dont know what bumping is in fact this is my first thread and still have no idea how to quote as well i have permanent residency in the US through the green card thing actually An a star is equivalent to 5 A+s An A is equivalent to an A-and i think a B is either a B+ or a B-
the minimum requirement for UCLA under the british system is 5Cs for O lvs and a minimum of 3 A levels So personally i think its an okay score
Community service actually comes under the CAS requirement of the IBDP im supposed to do only 50 hours but i did 150 in my first year itself and probably will climb to 300 hrs
by the time i get my actual results
I can apply both out of state as well as in state which would you recommend? for UCLA AND UC B? My country has actually been ravaged by war and it was only recently that it ended most of my community service has been helping with building homes teaching children etc for all these homeless and isolated people do you think im on par with stanford yale etc where academics are concerned? thanks for all your time btw and sorry for my inadequacy with regard to the use of this forum i understand that writing in long paragraphs and not answering your question directly must be time consuming

It’s when you post in your thread so it goes to the top of the list in its subsection so more people will see it.

That’s okay, almost no one here knows how to quote.

Then it won’t help you or hurt you. There is no way for you to get in-state tuition, however.

It sounds good, but I’m not sure it’s relevant to admissions.

I don’t think you can apply in state because you don’t have residency.

Now there’s a good EC… It will help you greatly in admissions and you could write a fabulous essay about that.

According to your IB scores, pretty much. But I’m not an expert on IB scores, so don’t quote me on that. I think a 6 is like an A-?

It’s okay, but you probably want to fix up your grammar and capitalization. Short paragraphs are best. Press enter twice between paragraphs. Basically, you want to make your posts “pretty.”

An update on your chances:
UCLA/Berkeley: you have a good shot
Stanford, Yale and Dartmouth: you have as good of a shot as most people applying, definitely apply there if you really like those schools.

And remember, chance threads are people’s OPINIONS so they may not be accurate…

I will definitely incorporate all what i experienced during my community service into my essay :). Hopefully that will give me the advantage i need over all the other candidates with similar applications. By the way you said that i cant apply in state because i dont have residency? On either the UCLA or Berkeley website it said that i can apply as a ‘‘Domestic’’ applicant if i had permanent residency which a green card gives me which makes me eligible for in state tuition i think ill apply from OOS though since i may have a better shot at admission then.

Do you think applying to Darthmouth’s undergratuate business program ED will give me a better chance?
My first choice was actually Dartmouth, second being Berkeley’s Haas business school and third UCLA, UCI and UCSD were my safety schools.
Now i know that Dartmouth is too competitive for me so ill be happy with getting into Berkeley at least :)

Applying as a domestic applicant would mean you would be evaluated against OOSers who live in states besides California. Establishing residency within the UC system is incredibly hard because UC wants the extra $20,000 of tuition money. So I guess your options would be to apply as an OOSer or an international. For reference, UCLA accepted around 25% of OOSers this year and 30% of internationals (I don’t know if those figures are right, but internationals had a higher acceptance rate).

I don’t know anything about Dartmouth’s business program. Applying ED will give you a very slight advantage.

I read the posts above and I’m not sure I still understand exactly how your grades work but I’m going to assume that you have mostly A’s or the equivalent of A’s. In the US we have unw gpa’s based on a scale of 4. A=4, B=3, C=2, etc. I think that you should be fine for any of the UC schools. UC Berkeley might be a bit more difficult but I still think you would have chances. Stanford, Yale, and Dartmouth will all be harder. Since I don’t know your GPA, it’s really hard for me to tell, I’m sorry I’m not familiar with your grading system. All I can say is that Dartmouth will probably be your best bet of the 3. Good luck!!

GCE O Levels are perfectly acceptable!
And your scores are great!
For those who do not know;
GCE Grade American grade
A* A+
A A
B A-
C B+
D B-
E D
F F

You have a good nice chance, best of luck!!
