International Student filling IDOC, please help

Hello everyone,

I received email from Collegeboard recently that says I need to submit IDOC.
2 of my colleges require IDOC but 1 of them emailed me last week and said it's not required of international students. I emailed the other one to find out about their policy and they said it is mandatory. So I logged into my IDOC account and they have asked so many confusing questions. 90% of the questions they ask is not even meant for international student, so I guess I need not worry about those?

I have been asked these 3:

1) A complete signed copy of your (the student's) (and your spouse's if married) 2013 federal income tax return (or a translated copy of your country's equivalent), including all required Schedules and all Partnership or Corporate returns, is required if you filed or will file a federal income tax return for 2013. Do not send tax worksheets unless required for submission to the IRS. Do not send state tax returns or previous years' returns unless you are specifically instructed to. If you (and your spouse) are not required to file a 2013 federal or equivalent income tax return, you must submit a Non-tax Filer's Statement and supporting documentation.

2) A complete signed copy of your parents' 2013 federal income tax return (or a translated copy of their country's equivalent), including all required Schedules and all Partnership or Corporate returns, is required if your parents filed or will file a tax return for 2013. Do not send tax worksheets unless required for submission to the IRS. Do not send state tax returns or previous years' returns unless you are specifically instructed to. If your parents are not required to file a 2013 federal or equivalent income tax return, they must submit a Non-tax Filer's Statement and supporting documentation.

3) A completed Business/Farm Supplement.

Obviously, I don't have a spouse or extramarital relations lol so I don't need to do anything there?
I will submit 2
But I am confused of 3, business supplement is too complicated and all our business produces is less than $5k per annum. Can I not submit that?

Next issue is that IDOC says we need to post IDOC packet with cover sheet to:
College Board IDOC
P.O. Box 4017
Mt. Vernon, IL 62864

Postal service in my area is crappy and it is way too much the cost (3x the cost of CSS profile submission)... I submitted my CSS profile with a waiver code. Now since IDOC is mandatory, what do you suggest me to do? Can I email IDOC rather than post? Any help will be appreciated.

Especially I want to hear what international students, alums, veterans got to say about this :)

(1) If a business supplement is required, then you have to submit it. If your business income is only $5k/year, then it won’t be complicated to fill out. Take another look at it. In all likelihood, the answer to most of the questions will be “zero.”

(2) If you had income or paid taxes in your country, then you have to submit that tax return, as well as your parents’ information.

(3) No, you cannot email the packet to IDOC. It has to be mailed. Period. Even if you’re an international student.

What you need to do is contact College #2 again. Tell them you cannot afford to mail the IDOC packet, and ask if you can instead email the documents directly to the college. Explain that they are the only college you are applying to that requires IDOC, so it really is a significant financial burden to have to pay for postage for just that one college. Tell them you will put together all the required documentation, but would really appreciate being able to email it to them if that is at all possible.

It sounds like what you asked, when you contacted them the first time, was if you could simply not provide any of the required documentation . . . so I’m not surprised they said “no.” If you now explain that you are willing to provide the documents, and the only difficulty is the cost of postage, they might well agree to let you email the documents directly to their office.

@dodgersmom thanks for the reply. When I emailed #2 college, I only asked if international students are required to submit IDOC too or if CSS only would suffice… They told me that it is required, and to email them if any help is required. I guess that ‘help’ is now going to be required :)

I dont have income so 1) is not for me. I have 2)'s docs with me. 3) is going to take some time. I will email the admissions and see if mailing via post is mandatory. Thanks!

Yes, do email them and explain. Under the circumstances, I don’t see why they wouldn’t allow you to submit by email.

As for the business/farm supplement, it really does look worse than it actually is. It took me less than 5 minutes to complete. Many (if not most) of the questions only apply to businesses much more complicated than my own. You may find that it’s really not that difficult . . .

My parents will but have not filed tax return yet. In my country, we don’t file it till May. What should I do?? Should I send them last year’s?

Bump^

@onmyway I guess in that case you will have to send last year’s tax return (the latest one) if your parents are still to file of this year’s. At least while filling the CSS profile, it said us to fill the information relating to last year’s tax if this year’s tax is still to be filled. IDOC is just a part of CSS so it should also play by the same rules, maybe?
April 15 is the deadline for most of the college’s IDOC. I would suggest you to contact your college’s financial aid office and ask clearly to be double safe.
Please update this thread once you are through.
