International student: Transfer from one Unversity to another

Hello,

I am new not only in this counrty but also in the Cafe. I am an international student from Liberia, West Africa and will be studying for a MDiv in the School of Theology of a certain University this Fall. Just glad to be a part of what is going on this site. There is so much to learn from gurus like you.

I Have a situation and need your input; please hear me out: I want to transfer to another school in my second year. What are my options? I have already decided on the school I want to transfer to. I appreciate your suggestions.

Glad to be here and thanks in advance for your input.

If you were an undergraduate student, I would tell you just to submit a transfer application, but I am not sure if theology/grad school transfers work the same way. I would recommend you talk to the professors at your current university because they will tell you the technicalities of such transfers. Be careful though because questions about transferring are often not very well received if you ask them only a week or two into the program, or even by e-mail before the start of the program. It is rather uncommon to start graduate school with the intention of transferring. Why don't you want to give your first university a chance?

The situation here is that I was unable to raise the required financial support in time to enter the school of my choice so I was advised by my sponsors to apply to this other school instead of being out of school for an entire year. Tuition at my current school is not as high as the school ofmy choice. On a personal note I want to be in a program with a very strong emphasis on the biblical languages because my goal is to do a PhD. When I start my doctoral program I don't want to waste time making up for language defeciency. That's the situation.

I suggest you post your question on the Graduate School forum of this site. Lots of knowledgeable posters there.

I, too, think it is uncommon to transfer as a grad student. But I don't really know. One thought that occurs to me is that you get your MDiv at school #1 and then apply elsewhere for the doctorate. But that is only a guess on my part; ask the good folks on the grad school forum.

Good luck.
