Hi, I’m a senior in high school and I applied to universities in the US only and though I’m not from any of the 7 banned countries its pretty likely the country I’m from will join the list soon.
So I wanted to know what I could do, will my applications to the ones I’ve already applied to be rejected? the deadlines for Canada and UK universities are over and I dont know what to do now.
Dont panic. Why do u think ur cntry ll come undee ban … it may nt be
Many Canadian universities still accept applications - Waterloo for stem, Mount Allison, Bishop’s, Lethridge, Simon Fraser, UNBC, Concordia, Dalhousie, York…
For safeties apply to Quebec ‘colleges’ (cegep). The first year won’t count against freshman status, meaning you’ll still qualify as a freshman and for freshman scholarships in the US, and it’ll give you a heads start for McGill or UBC OR uT.
My recommendation :true safety, Cegep Gaspe section anglophone; for a likely, on the canadiancommonapp application system, Dawson college in Montreal + the Champlain regional they offer as a backup; and on the sram application system Champlain Lennoxville. Deadline February first but the apps are super easy, you just upload your transcripts basically. They’re inexpensive and will help you keep going till the ‘ban’ is no longer in effect or you’re on your way to a Canadian university.
Since half the picks seem arbitrary to a certain extent, I think you’re better off planning for the worse. And if nothing happens, then better safe than sorry, you can laugh at how overprepared you were. Personally I’d rather feel silly than sorry when it comes to such life altering events.
There’s a thing in the UK called UCAS extra - don’t know if internationals can use that? (I don’t know a huge amount about it, but I think its for getting places and it may be a help) also clearing? It depends on the university, but some may accept later applications (think not top 20 ones) if you explain your circumstances and that you want to go there
It has become clear to me that the US has become hostile to immigrants, especially those from predominately Muslim countries. There has also been chatter about freezing H1Bs potentially impacting any practical training you may seek after graduating from a US University anyway. The UK Brexit also has the potential to be hostile to immigrants as that was the very issue Brexit was based on. The future is very uncertain and there seems to be no regard for the individual lives affected.
Given the state of the world, I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestion to submit additional applications in Canada, which has shown remarkable hospitality and enlightenment. Other potential countries with English language instruction are Ireland (EU), Australia and South Africa. Canada and Australia also seem to want talented immigrants to help grow their economies. I would strongly consider attending school in Canada over the US if that’s a possibility.
In any case, I wish you the best of luck.
Some UK schools do have rolling admissions. And if the worst comes to the worst, you could always take a gap year and re-apply next year.
Sit back and don’t worry. I guarantee you that your country will not “join the list” because Jordan, UEmigrates, Saudia Arabia, Egypt etc. are ALLIES. South Asian Countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, ETC. are ALLIES. Also, the US’s banned country list is an executive order- meaning that it only lasts 90 days. Colleges start in September, so if Congress rules the ban unconstitutional, it will most likely not affect you at all. A college like Columbia will NOT take the executive order into consideration when evaluating you- you should absolutely not worry.
^ the problem is that the list is arbitrary, and the ban will be in effect when college decisions have to be made (March-April). Reince Priebus has said the list could be added to.
Saying “you should absolutely not worry” when millions have been affected already doesn’t help. Some are stuck in limbo, some families are separated. Legal US residents, British citizens, German citizens - how can internationals 'absolutely not worry '?
Saying “you should absolutely not worry” is downright irresponsible.
I am worried, you should be too.
@bubblepop12444 For the record, Iraq is an ALLY and the ban applies even through no one from any country in the ban has ever committed an act of terrorism on US soil.
*may I edit, Permanent Residents are exempt from the travel ban.
@londondad If we “never know,” there’s no reason to scare the OP.
“With regards to Universities, permanent residents or those with visas will be allowed back in 90 days.” This may or may not end up being true, but this still means that students will miss this semester at school.
OP, if you were my child, I would advise against attending a university in the US at this time.
Op: apply to other schools. See in April whether you can or would like to go to the US for college, or elsewhere. No reason to panic, but make sure you have choices.
Don’t panic. Before this becomes political…have you applied to local universities? I would hope so given how difficult admission into US Unis is for internationals. If the deadlines permit, try the U.K. If it interests you.
At this point, wait and see. I highly doubt your country will join the list. And I am confident this will be short lived. But you want options if you no longer feel good about coming.
Your country will not join the list. The only countries that are on the list is because of threats against terror faced by war-torn areas. This is not an all Muslim country ban. It’s only a ban against countries in which international terrorist organizations such as ISIS and Al Qaeda reside. It would look awfully bad on the Trump admin to ban your country, with no ties to terrorism, simply bc its a Muslim country. Don’t fret.
And…politics. Dress it up however you want, now we are into a political discussion.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Yup. As easy as it is, let’s not drift there; policy discussion is not allowed.
Factual statements are fine, e.g. the current executive order states… or Judge XYZ issues stay. Opinions on the events of Friday and beyond, or speculation of what happens next, or what a gov’t official may/may not say is treading dangerously. Several posts deleted.
Thank you everyone
@confusedegg r u planning ur 4 yr class in US this fall…
