So... originally, i was planning to major in international relations, but as i thought about it more, i don't really want anything too political for personal reasons. I don't have enough interest in the field of political science, and i don't want to corner myself in having to work as a diplomat the only career option i have.... but what i really want out of my major is just more of culture, society, and anthropological aspects of the study.

Other schools have a major called "international studies" as opposed to "international relations", which is more political. Am I able to somehow create my major of "international studies" that isn't available in the university? If so, how should I?

My other college option includes university of richmond, which actually DOES have an international studies program, and a leadership program i am interested in.

I really love Rochester, but the only thing i don't really like about the school is its limited choice of major selections. But i guess that's why they have an option of creating your own major.....

any thoughts????????

Great question, my D is considering a similar plan as well. She likes the humanitarian and linguistic aspects of an Internation Relations program, without the focus on the political. We are hoping to discuss this at the advising part of the upcoming open house on Friday. Her other college option has an International Studies program as well, so we are weighing the 2 before making a decision. She is leaning (as is Bank of Dad) towards UR, but the answer to this question will have some bearing on the final decision. We love the cluster concept, the percentage of students that can double and even sometimes triple major, the academic rigor and the social transparency of the administration of the school (as witnessed here on CC). She also loves the idea of continuing her music studies at Eastman. She also is intrigued with the linguistics and cognitive science programs, I think it’s sort of like a buffet right now, everything looks good, but one can only eat so much. I think that she will sample lots and go for seconds (pick her majors) and be successful.

best of luck shinosuke, great post. I dont have an answer, but will be interested in hearing what others have to say…
