Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong section, this is my first post.
I am interested in majoring in international studies/relations/affairs. My family is very near Atlanta, and I was hoping to stay around like 2-3 hours away so I could come back easily. I was wondering if anyone knew about Clemson Georgia or Georgia Tech’s IR/IS or like if one was considered better? I think I saw Georgia ranked on Niche but I don’t want to put tooo much into rankings. And I don’t expect GT to focus on it, but thought I’d include them Incase. I’ve seen Emory has a well thought of program for it I know; Emory would be my first choice if I get in and can afford it.
Or if any other schools like in the south, maybe like ~3 hours from Atlanta, if there are others with better programs than the 3 I mentioned? I’ll make my decision more on how I like the schools after visiting etc, but I was interested and wanted to see if I was missing any other schools in the area or if any of these 3 are better than the others in IR. Thank you!
Sorry, I didn’t specify my situation well. I graduated from a hs in South Carolina and my mom next year will be taking a job near ATL, though I’m pretty sure I can still get Hope/Zell my 2nd year possibly if I keep my grades up which could be a huge factor even if it’s 3/4 years. SC’s top scholarship doesn’t come close to even Hope from what I’ve seen. Thanks!
SAT is a 1390 right now but I will be taking it again and possibly subject tests depending on what my final SAT is. Reg GPA is a 3.93, and weighted is a 4.8 (I don’t think SC does weighted on the same scale as other states, as I was 6th in my class and my counselor didn’t act like it was very high or anything). My school did not offer AP I only took DE and IB as weighted classes (which is another reason I may take subject tests even if I don’t apply to one that recommends).
Also, I didn’t want to post this earlier to spam or bump but since I just posted: I realized it doesn’t look like Clemson has IR or an equivalent lol, so nvm sorry about that
@hoops775 I’d call UGA or GT and ask them about qualifying for Hope after a semester or year if you graduated from an OOS high school. It sounds like it might be possible, but they will know for sure. fwiw, my D has talked to GT’s admissions department about loving the school but not wanting to pay OOS tuition, and they’ve never mentioned getting the Hope in year 2.
Also, you need to understand SC and GA requirements for residency in regards to instate tuition when a parent moves. Here is what SC says:
For GA it’s 12 months of your parent and you living in the state and paying taxes. If you enroll as OOS and the change to in state appears to be possible, but the requirements are vague.
I’d call UGA and ask what specifically they look for in order to change to in state.
It might be worth it to take a gap year (perhaps abroad to help with IR) so that you can be considered instate based on parent’s residency right off the bat.
What’s your mother’s budget for college?
1390 is too low for GTech and may not be sufficient for UGA Honors. (IR is very prestigious and strong at UGA).
A gap year is something we’ve talked about if it would give me hope. My mom makes ~50k but my grandparents have been extremely supportive in my life and are veryy well off and it’s been kinda a thing since I was younger that like they would help us with college. But still if I could get Hope that would be so amazing (if I’m understanding everything about it correctly) and to be able to save them that much. If I could I would 100% stay in Georgia, so I guess that’s the biggest thing I should look into before thinking programs and everything.
I had no clue about Georgia’s IR! I knew they were great in public policy but that’s awesome. That’s makes me sooo excited lol if I get in.
