I live in Georgia but my parents will let me go out of state as long as it is a southern state. I was wondering if someone could give me an idea of my chances of getting into UofSC and Clemson
I just want to preface this by saying I go to GSMST (The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology). It is the #1 high school in Georgia and known for being extremely tough (which is why my GPA is so low). We start with 300 freshmen and end up with 180 seniors (kids drop out and go to the school they are zoned for if it is too tough for them) I have talked to a couple of admissions officers for colleges in Georgia and they know how tough the school. Hopefully, College Admissions Officers in South Carolina would have also heard of it.
Asian Female living in georgia
high school GPA: 3.3 (I am applying RD so might go up)
ACT: 32 (I am retaking aiming for a 34)
APs: AP Stat, AP Biology, AP World, APUSH, AP Gov, AP Calc, AP Computer Science, AP Macro, AP Micro, AP Lit, possibly AP Psych as well
ExtraCurriculars: lots of volunteer hours, two internships, Youth group for a nonprofit organization, dance (12 years), piano (10 years), school representative on development committee, Lionsheart Volunteer group, one summer job
Which AP’s do you still have left to take? Seems like you still have some easy A’s ahead and with the bonus 10 percentage points you get and added 1 pt to GPA you should be able to increase your GPA.
I’m sure Clemson is familiar with GSMST, as it’s only an hour and a half away and one of the top 10 schools in the country. What is your class rank or decile? Just double checking; are your parents on board with being full pay ($55k/year) OOS?
Also, with respect on whether to apply RD or not, that did not work out at all well for many people this year. Many schools had very high yield for their EA classes so their RD classes were unusually competitive with very low acceptance rates (Georgia Tech was 11 percent in RD for example). Clemson is an application that I would think about filling out when it opens in August. There are no essays required. Without clarification on your grades (is the 3.3. weighted or not, what is the breakdown A/B/C, etc.) it is difficult to determine whether RD will help you or not.
I think you had another post and asked about UGA - and the chances there are slim.
If they are allowing you to apply in the South, you’d have a chance at U of SC, doubtful at Clemson - but why not look at where you will get in:
UTK, KY, LSU, Ole Miss, MS State, Alabama, and likely Auburn - if you are looking at the big schools.
Or why not other gems such as UNC Asheville and Wilmington, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, any of the GA schools not named UGA/GA Tech, North Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, etc.
I promise you - going to one of these over another is not going to alter your career trajectory.
You are likely to do just as well and have the same opportunities coming out of, say Coastal Carolina, as you will at Clemson (unless you’re in a narrow field such as engineering).
You will get into lots of fine schools and U of SC is a possibility ( I don’t see Clemson as likely, UGA would be a definite no).
I believe the 3.3 is weighted. Freshman year I had mostly As, Sophomore year I had mostly Bs, Junior year first semester was mostly Bs and Second semester was mostly As
I’m trying to gage where you stand within your class, taking into account the reputation of your HS. I’m looking to see if by any chance you’re in the top 15%, or top 20%. Keep in mind when looking at flagships, the lower range of admission statistics are often from recruited athletes. If your intent is to transfer, I would look at feeder CCs for UGA, or possibly 2+2 programs. What is your intended major? It is possible that the classes won’t line up if you attend another state flagship, so check all classes with the UGA equivalency table. https://www1.admissions.uga.edu/transfer_equiv/TransferEquiv/Index
If not careful, you could spend $55k for a few gen eds.
If you were thinking that you will probably transfer to UGA or Georgia Tech you need to look at some of the feeder colleges were a transfer equivalency will be easy. Georgia State University in Kennesaw state for Georgia Tech. University of north Georgia for UGA
You should find the right school and attend, not look to transfer. FSU is highly unlikely with a 3.3. Some of the others you mentioned are likelies and fine schools.
