As my D bounces back and forth between what she wants out of a college, she has been increasingly drawn to International studies and the possibility of working directly with charitable organizations. (Pair that with Art and Psychology). Any recommendations for great schools for International Studies. We're leaning more toward Liberal Art schools than big universities if that possible. Also, south more than North / East more than West. But hey, we're open to all ideas. Any thoughts?

She should check out the 3 LACs in the suburbs of Philadelphia--Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore.

This will give her access to the myriad charitable groups working in Philadelphia. She is also allowed to enroll in classes at any of the 3 schools which would expand her reach. Heck, she can even take courses at the major-ivy-league-research-university that is the University of Pennsylvania. If you want an LAC, it's hard to beat Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore.

A similar arrangement exists between Barnard and Columbia. Of course then you're IN New York City for better and for worse.

while there are many good places to study international studies--the schools that have consistently been considered the top 5 over the last 40 years are Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Princeton, Columbia and Georgetown. Each of these has a strong alumni network working in the field which makes things much easier when looking for a job.

These rankings were published in the March/April 2007 Issue of Foreign Policy Magazine.
