International transfer dilemma (Please help)

Hi, I've just completed my first year of studies in a Southeast Asian university. Right now I'm having a hard time deciding whether to apply for credit transfer to UBC Vancouver.

The Issues:
1. My family and I got our PR status back in late 2009. They'll be moving here permanently this year after settling all the unfinished stuff back home.

But I'll be staying back for my second year of studies. To renew my PR status, I have to stay 2 out of 5 years (2010-2015) in Canada, which is impossible as I'm studying full time.

I haven't checked with the Immigration Department on whether they'll provide exceptions for those studying abroad. If I lose my PR, I'll have a hard time re-entering Canada.

The university I'm currently in is the oldest and one of the best here. But it isn't quite reputable outside the country.

The academics here are below my expectations. Most of the first year class lecturers were disappointing to say the least. But according to the seniors, second year should be much better.

I'm currently holding a government Public Service Department scholarship, which pays for my tuition, living expenses and still have a bit leftover for savings.

Honestly, although the university was below my expectations, I guess I'm a bit too comfortable and familiar with the environment here, as this sort of mediocrity might be considered the norm in my country and I grew up in it.

So I'm feeling nervous about stepping out of my comfort zone and applying to UBC, even though I've been in Canada a few times to visit my relatives.

I'm not sure whether I can afford to pay for a UBC education without financial aid.

Grades-wise, I think I'm okay:
University CGPA: 3.81
Grade 12 CGPA: 4.0

So should I:
1. Complete my degree here then apply to graduate school at UBC (If possible?)
2. Apply for transfer after my second year here.

Also, what are my chances of getting approved as a transfer student at UBC?

The key question should be whether you really care much about your Canadian residency status. If yes, then you should transfer. You will need to check stats on your chances as a transfer to UBC. It seems to be fine base on your GPA.

Check with a immigration lawyer on Canada’s PR status.

I’ve checked some immigration forums and apparently, studying outside Canada doesn’t count.

So I guess it’s now or never, if I don’t reenter Canada before April 2013 my PR obligations can’t be fullfilled. Better start applying and hope UBC will accept me.

Thanks for the help.
