Internationals need HIGHER SAT?!

Hi Guys,

I was recently told by some of my friends who graduated that international students applying to UC Berkeley need to have a much much much higher SAT to compete for places. I know that it is hard for us to get into a Cali Public University but I was thinking that our essays/ECs/GPA would be scrutinized more so than SAT.

I got a 1450/2170 (690CR 760M 720W) and I was told that you need like a 2300 if you are an international.

Could someone please clarify this?

Cheers

one of friends is IEOR, did not have astounding ECs in HS besides being student body president and she got in with an 1800ish SAT.

but on average, i believe international students do have higher SAT scores than CA residents

Isn’t the same true or OOS US citizens?

It is not that you are international, it is that you are not Californian

Would my score be considered “higher” than average for Berkeley? I always thought that Cal schools were the rebel schools for modifying the whole crux of the SAT. Would they really put so much weight into this?

I got lower SAT scores than you and I got in.

The SAT Writing section was apparently added because the UCs wanted it, so…

I’m guessing you were in-state? What exactly does UC-B want or expect rather from international students? Same criteria as the ivies or perhaps slightly different? How is SAT used in the admissions process for us?

I have a friend from Korea going to Cal. English is hard for her, so she ended up with a 19-something (800 math) and got in.

I got into Berkeley with 1910 SAT. You should really really really consider taking the ACT. I got a 29 and it was what Berkeley was looking for. Berkeley’s avg ACT score is quite low for some reason. Anyways, test scores are getting less and less respected… You should really concentrate on your essay instead of worrying about your SAT. People with extremely low test scores and have been rejected by schools like UCI got into Berkeley because of their personal statement and extra curricular activities. Cal actually isn’t that hard to make in…

The average international student at Berkeley, on average, as a higher SAT than instate students. Everything else depends on you, the admissions officer, and some luck.

No, I’m OOS. My take on it would be to do as well as you can on the SAT and then cross a lot of fingers.

Well lol I dont think I can retake my SATs again. I think my essay will be pretty good so I guess I have a fair chance. According to collegeboard, my SATs are in the 75th percentile for Cal already so I guess I’m fine.

2170 is more than enough. I know internationals who’ve gotten in with sub 1900 scores.
