Internet and college

I’ve heard that colleges can track your internet history and Google searches.is this true or just a rumor. And if so what do colleges look from you on the internet

Colleges are not tracking your search history.

But, as an 8th grader, you should be aware that anything you POST on the Internet you should consider a permanent record, even if you later delete it or change your username. This especially refers to services like Facebook, but even Twitter and Snap-chat posts can be screen-captured.

If you think you might ever post something you might regret, create a secret account that cannot be traced back to you – like your account here.

All colleges will not routinely screen the Internet for info about you. But, if a small, elite school is about to admit you, they might double-check the Internet to make sure you’re not a creeper or a jerk.

So take care what you post over the next few years.

They can if you are using the schools wifi or school computers on a college campus. But generally they don’t really care enough to censor or restrict access to certain sites.

I dont post anything or even use social media so am i okay for now WasatchWriter

BTW i love your profile picture, those are my favorite comics

would you recommend Incognito mode

So the most a college can do is search the internet for me, nothing more?

Colleges, employers, and others could always stumble across you on the Internet. Folks don’t necessarily have to come looking for you. So, it’s a good idea to envision what you say on the Internet as being tomorrow’s newspaper (do they still have those?) headline. You never know. Recently, my son looked at his admission file for school, and found that the school made no effort to look at anything about him outside the four corners of his application package. At least some selective schools seem to make no effort to look at social media use by their applicants/

My problem is not social media, because I have never posted in my life. I am just worried if college can track my google and youtube search history

You mean from your personal devices? Just how would they do that? Think about, even if they had NSA-like abilities (and they don’t), how much time and resources it would require to do this to even a few applicants.

I’m not sure on what sorts of things you’re searching that your worried about colleges looking at that information. If it’s really nefarious enough, you have to think more about the FBI.

By the way, College Confidential is a type of social media.

No it’s because the channel I watch has some odder videos and I have clicked on them accidentally sometimes

I don’t think colleges have time to look at facebook pages either. Be careful though - once you start applying for interships or jobs your junior or senior year of college, employers will be running internet queries on you to see if there is anything negative or scandalous about you on the internet.

Are you a high school student or a college student? This was a pinned question earlier about “Do colleges google applicants?” While they might do a quick google search, I really don’t think they will delve into the intricacies of your youtube account and who you follow, and if so, you could always take you real name off of those channels.

Im a middle school student with high paranoia. going to go to 9th grade

You’ll be fine. Colleges cannot track your internet history and google searches. Nor do I think they would want to even if they had the time. They are prevented from doing that by privacy laws. The only people that can do that are intelligence agencies that work for the government (ie. the FBI, NSA) and the websites that you make accounts from (ie. Google). But even then colleges have no access to that kind of information

so the worst that can happen is a simple google search, nothing more.

???

Yes. The odds that they’ll do even that isn’t very high either. You’re only a freshman - you really don’t need to be this stressed or paranoid about colleges (as seen by your threads).

So, in conclusion, they cannot access my Youtube or Google search history. The worst they could do is a simple google search?
