Internet at illinois

Is there a wireless network all over campus so that you never need ethernet cables, how about in dorms? wireless?

Because cables really suck!

There's no wireless in the dorms, so you'll need an ethernet cable to hook up to the router (the router is provided by the school). Of course, there were several people on my floor, ahem, who set up wifi routers in their rooms; this isn't allowed, and you can get in trouble if you're caught.

On the other hand, there's wifi available in almost every classroom building on campus (i can't even think of a classroom building that doesn't have wifi). A lot of kids bring their laptops to the lecture halls and use the wifi.

what about around the campus, like on the quad?

Are they thinking of investing in wireless internet in the dorms any time soon?

Yup. The whole quad, union, buildings, everything. I think U of I is known for being one of the most wireless universities. With that said, no word on dorms becoming wireless. It's frequently rumored but no one really knows.

U of I is perfect for me...most of the campus being wireless is just another plus...except for the dorms =/...I hate cables...

Personally I prefer ethernet cables in the dorms, as its hard to track it to the user.

No wireless in dorm rooms, but it is available in some dorm lounges. Wireless routers are not allowed because the default option of acting as a DHCP server interferes with the entire building's network. However, if you're savvy enough to turn off the DHCP option in your router settings, no one would ever know.
Wireless Policy

soo your saying you can use a wireless network for your room, and noone could find out? hmm sounds good.

well..... yeah, if you set it up correctly.

but also, your RA will come in your room at the very least, about once a semester, to do a routine fire inspection. also, during the breaks, the hall coordinators come into the room and check things out. now, most RAs and coordinators probably wouldn't even notice a wifi router under your desk or whatever, and most probably wouldn't care, but there's a chance that it might get confiscated.
